If you have asthma, where in the United States is the most challenging place to live?
For the third time in five years, Knoxville TN, has won that dubious distinction. It's been ranked the #1 Asthma Capital by the Asthma ans Allergy Foundation of America(AAFA) Since 2004,AAFA has examined conditions in the 100 largest metropolitan area's in America and has ranked them based on the quality of life for people with asthma. Knoxville rose to the top of the 2008 rankings in part because of it's higher than average pollen counts and pollution levels, its weak public smoking bans and its residents frequent use of asthma "rescue" medications. And with approximately 8.5 percent of it's citizens suffering from the condition, the city has an asthma rate surpassing the national average of 8 percent. Knoxville's asthma prevalence is worse than the national average; its pollen levels are worse than the national average;and it's air quality is worse than the national average. says Mike Tringale, AAFA'S director of external affairs. We hope that this ranking encourages patients to work with their doctors to develop a better daily asthma management plan. Knoxville allergist Bob Overholt,M.D. an asthma expert, agrees;Everyone in the local medical community sees firsthand how this area affects asthma patients. And it's not just a spring and fall problem anymore. We see it all year long.and for many reasons.
