Hi everyone, I'm just looking to connect with other vegetarians. I have posted here before but it seems like a slow forum. I would like to try some vegan cheeses but I don't want to spend the money on something that isn't so good, anyone have any experience with any?

What are vegan cheese maed from? Soy milk? I think they make a brand of soy based yogurt, too.

I have seen these advertised for the lactose intolerant, but I would thinkg the would fall under the same nutritional values needed for a vegan as well.

I haven't tried the cheese, but the yogurt wasn't too bad.

Hi Cowhugger,

I make my own soy cheese as I find the bought ones expensive and tasteless. I buy a product called Toffutti (it's like cream cheese) which I think is available in America. The cheeses I make are similiar to a cottage cheese, or I make a yoghurt cheese which is smoother. If you are going to buy a Vegan cheese, read the labels as they may contain rennet and you need to check which type it is. The usual source of rennet is the stomach of slaughtered newly-born calves and is sometimes found in soy cheese. Most vegetarian cheeses though, are manufactured using rennet from either fungal or bacterial sources.

Let me know if you would like the recipe for soft cheese.
