My state is colored blue -- gifted programming mandated, partially funded by the state. Locally, I know there is a highly-gifted middle school, and an accelerated math/science charter from 7th grade (algebra) on.

I'm hoping that as state education boards and legislators hear from constituents that have seen this map, there will be some positive changes. Nobody wants to be in a red state!

Also- the map can be a bit misleading, as far as the use of the word, "funding". Some of the gifted budgets are laughable.

Good point. I don't know about other parts of the state, but in the town where I live, it seems to be handled fairly well. But since we didn't have a child in their elementary or middle school programs, I can't really assess. When we lived in FL, the county (and county made a difference from what I heard) where we lived did what I consider a mediocre job. Once a week (albeit most of the day) wasn't really enough, but it was better than some places I've heard about that pull out for 1 hour a week.

My state is orange (Gifted programming mandated; funding not available).

Same with mandating. Just because identifying a child is require, that doesn't mean there is a program. The best we could do in our district--thus far--is get my son grade accelerated, and I count my blessings because not all schools in the district will even consider it, let alone do it.
