Is there an article on how to intrepret the instructions for patterns? Or can anyone offer some advice on this topic. Maybe it is just me but it seems my biggest challenge is understanding the instructions.

As an example, I am making this pet afghan . I have completed the four patches and have joined them together but I don't understand the instructions for the border. It says

Does this mean I crochet one row of sc around the entire blanket and then continue until I have five rows? I am very, very new to crochet and I am sure these instructions make sense to all of you but if someone can find an easier way to explain it to me I would be most grateful.

Yes, it certainly sounds to me that you should be crocheting one row around the afghan followed by another 5 which will give you 6 in total.
