4 weeks ago,I went a new stylist and said I wanted to keep my length and just have a trim but she ended up giving me a shag style haircut. The bottom comes below my shoulders but my hair is heavily layered. I hate it! The bottom looks shaggy and I feel like it is almost a mullet, blech. What is the best way to grow out all of the layers. I like to have face framing layers but not so much layering through the back and sides. Would it be best to just have someone bring up the bottom some or would that make it look even worse? Also,I want to grow my bangs out so they can eventually be incorporated into the face framing layers so I feel like a mess at the moment. Anyone have any style ideas for now? Thanks

the best bet is to bring up the bottom so it is not liek amullet. Then have the stylist shape the face area only to give you those framing layers.
Obviosly your stylist didn't listen to you.
Another thing to consider when it grows out is to ask for a uniform layer cut. What this means is that there is no real seperation between the layers and they blend and don't give you the choppy shag look at the bottom.

Yep, bring up the back. Find a new stylist that you trust. Make sure to tell your stylist that you hate the layers that are in it now, that you like some FACE FRAMING layers and you want the bangs to blend in to to face framing layers.
The stylist may have to trim some of the existing layers so that they lay nicely and grow out smoothly.

thank you. I figured that I would definitely be losing some length now but that will be a lot better than the shaggy stringy hair at the bottom. She said she did it because my hair was too thick and heavy. I loved my long thick hair, sigh. Oh well, hopefully I will get there again. Thank you for your help and advice.

yeah it looks bad, almost like I have 2 different haircuts at the same time,LOL. I can't wait to get it fixed into something new. The only scary part is finding someone new who will do a good job. Thank you for all of your help.

HI, I'm so sorry this happened to you too. I had it happen once. I know what you mean, it looked like 2 different hair cuts on me too. I had to get the bottom cut. This happened yrs. ago. The stylist could have made some suggestions to you. But it was wrong for her to just do what she thought was best for you. It is your decision not hers. There are many good stylists out there. Ask your friends & family who they go to, if you like their hair.
Or you can even ask a stranger you see in public who has a nice hairstyle. You also can put in a complaint to the place you had the haircut done at. Someone might fix it for you. Or give your $ back. I want to do the same thing with my bangs. I had them 1 way for yrs. Many stylists told me they start too far into the hairline. So, I was stubborn about it, thinking it worked for me for yrs. But I try to keep a open mind. Now I see that they are right. The way I cut my bangs are rather outdated. So, I want to grow them out & do the samet thing you mentioned. Have them blend in with the rest of my layers.
I also have a Q for Lynne & Jase. If a lady wants bangs how far into the hair line should they go? The stylist's told me a half a inch or a inch into the hairline. 1 lady told me there are not specific rules of where they should start. But I really would like both of your opinions on it.
To HelloKitty, I hope that your hair grows real fast. I think once you get the bottom cut to even it out you will feel much better. My hair used to grow very slow. I was ill for a long time. But now that I am recovering, my hair seems to grow faster now. That helps alot. Have a wonderful day. Judy K. Chicago.

Bangs are a personal choice really. Depending on the persons hair you need to either go heavier or lighter... meaning more into the hairline or less. Some styles of bangs require more hair, especially the swoop type (current trend) or the layered full bang (think 80's). Then there is also the upkeep and how you want them styled. Generally I do not go more than an inch into someones hairline for their bangs. however I also tend to devide them more into a triangle or diamond patter before I cut and definately take the weight (or heavy line) out of them so they are more wispy and loose.
In the end, it depends on the client themselves and what the overall look you are going for.

thank you Judy. I am feeling very anxious. This was my first time going to a new person in 12 years. I went to the same girl for all those years and then decided to try someone new but now I wish I hadn't. The other person that used to do my hair would not be happy if I went to her to fix it. She always said her clients could go to someone else but she will not fix what someone else messed up. I'm sure I'll find someone new but right now I feel like I am in limbo,LOL.All this over hair, haha. I hope your bangs get done the way you want. I am still letting mine grow some. They were cut pretty short so it might be a while for me. My hair grows at an ok rate but feels like a lifetime sometimes. The good thing is that I have enough to pull up for a while until I get it all sorted out at least. Good luck with your hair.

Bangs are determined by the style that you wear, the shape of your face, growth direction of your hair and personal preferance. The current trends have to be considered, too, since a poor choice can date the style when a little alteration can make all the difference.

Don't forget it's summertime so you can go wild with hats right now! Go to a local shop and give yourself permission to get 3 or 4 hats you really like. Rotate between them. That way you can have an excuse for having your hair "hidden" for now
