Lisa- It was more of a...'this might help' post for anyone interested. I really need to specify that from now on.
One of the reasons I have the children I have now is because of birth control issues. Never really wanted more than one. Like you, my 14 year old came when I was 18. 8 years later, I had a child with my (then new) husband because he really wanted kids. Was ok with us having just one.
I used different forms of birth control and had a lot of issues with the hormones, so I switched to spermicide. Turns out I can't use it, allergic, and because my body rejected it, I ended up pregnant, twice on two different spermicides. That's where 3 and 4 came from.
I wanted a TL, but my husband was dead set against it. I was 'taking away his choice'. I waffled until his company closed and we lost insurance.
I found out about using lemon juice and also Vitamin C. These methods worked very well until I forgot to use either just once. If I had taken control and gotten the TL, I wouldn't have had a ton of arguments (some still going on) with my husband who thinks that ending a pregnancy is a way of saying I hate him so much I can't stand to bear his children.
I did try NuvaRing with no hormone issues. It was the only one on the market that didn't bother me badly. The first month there was some problems, but once past it, everything was great.
Have you read about lemon juice or Vitamin C?

Lisa, I haven't heard of any hormonal side effects with Essure. From what I gather, the TL hormonal problems may stem from disruption of the ovarian blood supply when the fallopian tube is cut; and since the tube and its blood vessels remain intact with Essure, that particular issue seems less likely. Also, some places will do Essure and then endometrial ablation, so you have permanent sterilization AND way lighter periods. I'm all about better living through technology. If you want to talk to people that have actually had the Essure procedure, you can try the [censored] Pagina forum, as I have seen several posts from ladies who've actually had it done. (If you've never been to that page, just be aware that it contains very open discussion about all aspects of sexuality, anatomy, and lots of other stuff.) Julie, I'm currently on Nuva Ring, and it's the only thing that I've tolerated well (a little reduction in libido, but it doesn't make me puff up or grow a super-stylin' mustache). That, and its easy to remember.

I have to say that I find it completely mortifying that you can't get a TL if you want one. And even IF the no kids thing was justifiable, which is is not, TWO kids -- what the heck is that!!! I am starting hate the obstetrical field with a passion -- a bunch of men making decisions for women, and mostly based on liability, NOT on women's health or desires. (As a non-CF sidenote, I am so sick of it, I homebirthed my last child with a midwife, which was a great experience in it's own right, but was mainly so I didn't have to deal with the annoyances of the hospital and doctors).
We are done having children at two, and facing the same dilemma. I'll likely go into early menopause, as I started my period late at 16, but that's still another 10 years or more before it's reliable birth control. I'm wary about vasectomy, because of some odd recent studies that associate vasectomy with certain types of early onset dementia for men (not a bogus, anti-CF study, before someone posts that...I'll try to find info if anyone is interested..it was an accidental finding while studying this type of dementia and is now being more fully explored).
I am hestitant to get a tubal -- aside from the fact that it's a whole surgery, clearly I don't like hospitals and GYNs, so I don't want to deal with that. Plus there is some intangible hesitation that makes no sense -- I KNOW I'm done having kids, but it just seems so FINAL. Do CFers ever deal with that hesitation -- knowing you don't want kids, but still hesitant to make that commitment physically and finally?
Going back on the pill seems awful -- when I got off it to get pregnant, I felt like I was emerging from a "haze" and swore I'd never go back on.
For the moment, we are just using condoms (when we have sex at all -- yes, all the CF jokes are at least kind of true -- kids are the BEST birth control!), but that hardly seems like a good long term or foolproof solution.
I think if I had to choose Vasectomy or TL, I'd go with the TL -- because I'd rather have control over my own fertility. A vasectomy isn't always foolproof either, and despite being radically pro-choice, I don't think I'd have the heart for an abortion myself. I do know one person got pg after a tubal, but she was a odd medical case with all kinds of other problems.

Megs - thank you so much for the information on Essure. I really will look into that.
I agree completely that female reproduction is far better than it was in the 70s. Back then only *married* women could get birth control because nobody else should have sex!!
But I was really upset recently when I went to change doctors, last fall. I found one right in my town here and contacted her. I told her I was on the pill. The receptionist said "sorry but we do not prescribe that here". I was like ... what??? I actually said, "But I do NOT want to get pregnant!" And she said something about them using other doctors to do that prescription - but I want a doctor who fully supports my choice and is with me 100% in my desire not to have children.
It really shocked me that they would even say that, and I found another doctor. I went to my next women gathering (I do that monthly with friends who are all child free except one) and they were shocked that someone would tell me that.

As soon as my Dh and i were married, we went and got him a vasectomy. We didn't tell our parents or anything - no one's business. I held his hand as he went through it, and it was super simple. A tiny nick, a little burn, a suture...then repeat. It was so easy. No real recovery time. For a woman, it's actual going unconscious surgery and a big deal. We have never had a second of regret. We love not having to worry about birth control.

Megs- The first little while I noticed a reduction in drive, too. After a while it seemed to come back and then increase. We did have some issues with it ending up on him (sorry to be crude) but it can be removed prior, then put back in place right after and never lose effectiveness.

I had the IUD and I bleed for three day and thought that was having a miscarrage or something...turns out the IUD was half way in and half way out and that was making me bleed. I am afride to try that again. or the essure. it is just too new and the drs here dont do them anyways... Part of me thinks that I have already went through menopause and I dont have periods so no period no eggs = no baby! the only problem is I have started a new med and I have had funky periods off and on for the past three months so... that and I always get pms and CRAMPS even if I dont have a period so... I doubt that I have gone through real menopause. my diebetic dr said it was poly fibro ovo cysitic something... and it was a hormone imbalence that causes insulin resestince and weight gain and a lot of other things like that stylish mustashe! oh yeah that is why God made Wax! but on the other hand if my husband can have a bread and mustache then women should have the same right after all why should I have to shave wax and tweeze every hair off my body when men dont? but that is another rant...
