Julia Child - the very famous French cook - did not have any children despite being married from 1946 on to husband Paul. She left an amazing legacy of changing the entire face of American cooking with her easy going attitude and you-can-do-it cooking shows.

She has an amazing background, she worked for the OSS during the war!

Does anybody use her books or remember her shows?

A friend of mine has *all* her books and loves them. Interestingly we are weaning ourselves completely off of cookbooks (paper ones). We go pretty much solely electronic recipes now.

It saves space and money!

I'm not a big cookbook person. I have ones I've gotten as gifts (many are in a drawer up stairs), a few of my dietitians and one of my grandmothers. Most of the recipes I use regularly are either ones I've created or ones given me by friends/family. When I got married a girlfriend had everyone who came to my shower bring with them two of their favorite recipes. I use quite a few of those still.

Oh, and as you say, the internet is so accessible when it comes to recipes. If I'm looking for something specifically it's often easier to find on the internet.

I don't cook from a recipe at all if I can get away with it. I just make it up as I go along. I enjoy cooking that way, it becomes a creative experience, a lot less dull than following specific guidelines and taking the time to measure things. I'm a lazy, free-wheeling kind of cook.

I sure do remember Julia Child - in her later years she lived in a community near mine in the Santa Barbara area. We would see her in town. I used to love her shows - her flair with food and animation she put into describing it. One thought that sticks with me is how she insisted on using real butter in cooking!

That is so cool Susan! It would have been great to see her live. She seemed to have such honest energy and passion on her TV shows. She was able to accomplish amazing numbers of things because her schedule was her own, her time was her own.

She really did help millions of people learn to cook more healthily and a wider range of foods.

It is cool that she was ahead of her time with butter.

I think she even did some of the series from her home.

Wow yes Wikipedia says -

"Beginning with In Julia's Kitchen with Master Chefs, the Childs' home kitchen in Cambridge was fully transformed into a functional set, with TV-quality lights, three cameras positioned to catch all angles in the room, a massive center island with a gas stovetop on one side and an electric stovetop on the other, but leaving the rest of the Childs' appliances alone, including "my wall oven with its squeaking door."[3] This kitchen-turned-TV-backdrop hosted nearly all of Mrs. Child's 90's era TV series."

That is so cool!! smile Imagine having your home kitchen a TV studio quality one!
