Pinecone, that very same thing has bothered me too. I think that many of these assumptions are such a deeply ingrained part of our social discourse that we rarely question their implications - but question them we should.

Anyway, I'm glad that I'm not the only one to think like this.

Maybe the word "helpless" would apply better than "innocent". Anything that is unable to protect itself, whether it be an animal, child, elderly person, person in the hands of a violent criminal could be termed as helpless.

Cruelty to either animals or children upsets me.
But I saw a thing on the news once about people abusing chickens at a KFC. (I won't go into details - although just first the record, physical NOT sexual!) Anyway I still think firing the people was NOT enough they should have been named and shamed and I don't know what I keep thinking sued!!
And I don't eat KFC anymore.
Yes I KNOW it was only that one branch but I don't CARE.
Anyway when I saw the footage I cried my eyes out.
But I also cry over human things too although sometimes there's such a deluge of it I have to shut off and be a bit indifferent or I would fall into a big black hole of despair. (Why I avoid the news.)
So I cried about the chickens but if hubby is watching the news and I just hear the SOUND of DESPAIR and pleading in someone's voice on the news I make hubby change the channel.
But what ANNOYS me is
if someone says STOP TALKING ABOUT IT dammit DAMN IT! PEOPLE STOP!! I have found that out the hard way myself but also when people haven't stopped talking about a subject when I have told them too they have regretted it!!
It's like when my colleague started telling me something bad off the news and I told her to stop and she didn't - - - that was the last straw, after all the bingos and trying to tell me (her and another colleague) how to dress eat etc - now I don't eat lunch with them anymore. I work through my lunch breaks. It's more productive. They think maybe I'm annorexic (yeah right I am still OVERweight) but in truth I eat PLENTY and it's better than putting up with THEIR [censored].
Point being boyfriend should have shut up when he was asked to.

P.S.
I admit I kinda DO see animals as more innocent. You see some kids (esp in today's society!!) grow up to hurt and kill and are NOTHING but TROUBLE.
Yes I know animals can hurt and kill but I still think humans can be more sadistic and maybe it's that most of the time animals don't kill their own kind?

Manatee, about the rape thing, I brought that up in another topic and nobody really responded to that idea.

Grey, I must have missed that as well.

>I'm curious about something. The term "innocent" is used almost automatically in connection with children, but I'm puzzled as to why, unless people are speaking in a religious context (i.e. of innocence as freedom from sin). Why are grown people not referred to as "innocent"? Does that mean that we are "guilty", and, if we are, of what?

I think the word "innocent" can have different shades of meaning. One is the opposite of guilty, of course, but there is also the meaning of unworldly - innocent in the ways of the world.

Or maybe, as Jimmy Carter did, all adults "lust in their hearts" (or commit other crimes of thought -- but hey, let's not go 1984 on this!)
