Since Holocaust remembrance day is coming up, I thought I'd post a question...

Do you know a holocaust survivor?

It is shocking to think anybody actually could belive the holocaust did not happen. I expect your poll will be interesting Cindy! Well done!

My German friends are deeply aware of the Holocaust and it is a criminal offence to deny it in Germany.

Hopefully there will be enough people who respond that we'll get a good sample....

I've always been facinated with the logic used to deny the holocaust... But, I figured I'd try to start a discussion!

I went to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. If anybody thinks it didn't happen, they should go there.

When I was in college, I read a lot about the Holocaust, including survivors' memoirs and diaries. It was a fascinating time in history.

I probably did know survivors as a child as I grew up in a heavily Jewish area. We have a museum in Richmond and I only learned about the museum on the Saturday before the anniversary of Krystallnacht. There was an event planned on Sunday but I didn't know about it until after. Perhaps it was by invitation only.

My father visited the Buchenwald camp shortly after it was liberated. He gets very angry with anyone that denies the existance of the Holocaust. I saw photographs from his military portfolio when I was a child. The photos included pictures of dozens of dead bodies on a hay wagon and pictures of the massive furnance ovens. We must never forget the Holocaust.

However, why is it that in remembering the Holocausts we forget the other major atrocities of history? Why do we concentrate of the atrocities of the Nazis and ignore those committed by the Japanese Imperial Army, like the "Rape of Nanking"? The Japanese atrocities committed against the Chinese and against Allied POWs was extremely brutal and sadistic. It was far more than mass murder. It was human butchery.

Remembering an event requires having an advocate.

You are absolutely right - we must learn from the past; however, these horrible events occur again and again - just look at Africa - Uganda, Rwanda, Darfur, the Congo, Somalia, and the list goes on around the world.

Hi, Cindy. I do not know of anyone having survived such a tragedy in our world history but I have never been as enlightened (and this may seem a bit small) but it was watching Schlinder's List by my favorite producer Steven Speilber, that my eyes opened to such a time in history. It is just amazing as I read over all the posts of just how much bloodshed has occurred since the beginning of man.

Though you may not received a lot of replies by those who know of someone personally, your inquiry opens up many other doors that will leave us all thinking about how history has made a mark that will affect every man, woman, boy and girl in this world. Thanks again for your question.

Hi Cindy,
Thanks for opening up this topic. When I was a child one of my neighbors had a number tattooed on her wrist. She was polish. I am not sure if she was Jewish or not. I assumed so.
I have always been interested in the Holocaust and have read many books and seen movies and documentaries.

History repeats itself; and just as stated in some of the post the same thing is happening today.
