I always find some interesting and then unusual search phrases on the autism site. I am always using google with long sentences seeking samples, experiences, etc.

Since it is April and autism awareness month I wanted to highlight the many searches and get feedback on what readers are interested in and specifically looking to read about and see what I can do in these areas.

This list is in no particular order

Bonnie,

I'd be interested in why there is such a long wait list to see a behavioral pediatrician for having a child evaluated.

Insurance companies now only cover it if it is diagnosed within a certain time based on the medical facilities rules (if I take my child to one facility she has to be diagnosed within the age of four, if I take her to another she has to be diagnosed within the age of six). Meanwhile you're waiting six months or more to get a call and hope that you can get seen before they go to school.

It is frustrating to say the least. Being a mom of three, and other areas of our lives being busy, I've failed getting the process moving along outside of doing an intake call at one facility before my FIL passed away. Setting that aside, however, I also feel the system is failing me. Why should the referal lady at the peds office have to hand me a document with twenty different places to call, where I will be on hold, wait for call backs that never come, do unproductive intake without promised call back in four months etc. It is have if people are just trying to make this go away.

If my daughter had a heart condition she would be seen right away. If she has a mental or learning disability I'm on hold. I'm even near some of the best medical facilities available outside of Philadelphia.

Is it because everybody flocks here, or is there something wrong with the system (not enough doctors, or a way for the system to excuse itself from covering these problems), or are there just that many children with problems?

Those are just some of my questions.

I did write something in daughters and do some links to your site. I have an 18 year old brother with Asperger's and we are hoping to have my daughter ruled out as having it or find out if it is Asperger's or something else she has like ADHD. Having seen my brother grow up though, a lot of the traits are there.

Good questions Violette. I did read your article and thanks for the links. I think it really depends on the age as you mentioned and also where you reside.

Terms are different in various parts of the country and world. For example I never heard of Behavioral Pediatrician. We have a Developmental Ped who is part of the feeding team, that is funded thru the State of CA.

I thought AS would be diagnosed by a Psychologist or Neurologist. I have several books about adolescents on the spectrum and mostly talking about AS and will browse through them and see if any chapters on the diagnosis process.

What about getting a diagnosis thru the School district? My now 13 year old had his done thru LAUSD and my other son had his thru the state Regional Center. Does she have an IEP, are you wanting school services or home therapy?

Have you read any books by Tony Atwood? Here are some links I found that might be helpful:

How it is diagnosed

I looked through my copy of Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Helping preteens and teens get ready fot the real world. This seems to be geared for those who already have a diagnosis and do not mention it at all.

The Asperger's Answer Book - the top 300 questions parents ask by Susan Ashley, Ph.D. has this on the back cover:

What symptoms signal that my child should be evaluated?

What tests are used to diagnose Asperger's Disorder?

Chapter 2 goes from page 27 to 53 and is entitled, Getting your child evaluated.

what type of dr should evaluate my chikld?

Pediatricians
Dev Peds
Psychiatrists
PEdiatric Neurologists
Clinical Psychologists
Pediatric Neuropsychologists
Educational Psychologists

DSM-IV-TR

Chapter 3 is co-existing disorders and covers ADHD, ADD and OCD plus many others.

I would look for this book

Hi Bonnie, she is four and not in school yet. I think I wrote down the wrong thing, it is Developmental Ped.

Thanks for the info on the books and articles.

We just wanted to pinpoint if it was Asperger's, as she is a handful. She has been doing better in a two-day a week preschool setting (halfdays). Most times she is a handful at home. Listening is an issue, trying to keep her on focus when you try to talk to her.

Then the little things they said she would grow out of a few years ago, rocking to settle her self, chanting, now she spins and runs in circles.

She is smart and the preschool pointed out that her artwork was telling in that she draws above what is expected of her age.

Thank you so much for the links as I'll be going through them and maybe if I can handle the next intake better we will get seen. My husband thinks maybe I didn't present the information well enough or something. Short of sending them a video of her I don't know what else I could have done to speed this along. There seems to be so many barriers to getting seen.

I looked over your bio to get the ages of your girls and assumed it was the 11 year old since your article on autism and girls specified middle school.

Are you leaning toward AS over autism because of the family genetics? The best way would be for the school district to do an assessment, when she enters the system. Also what about her diet and sensory issues?

I would look at the article I wrote about two books if you suspect autism:
