Anyone ever sew a Duvet cover? We need a new one but I haven't been able to find a ready made one with a pattern I like so I've been thinking of making one.

There are some special features I want to include like a zipper, do they make ones that long; some kind of fastener to keep it from sliding from the top; an extra piece of fabric for the bottom to tuck under the mattress.

Suggestions welcome...

You can buy zips on the roll, like elastic almost.

Do you mean a fastener for the duvet to the cover? I usually sew some baby grade velcro/hook and eye tape to the inside of the duvet cover and the top of the duvet.

I like the idea of the extra piece of fabric to tuck under, (although I don't think 6ft 4 hubby would agree;)

Hmmmn. You've got me thinking now... The biggest problem for me would be the finding fabric of the right width. But then the choice in the UK is VERY limited.

I haven't made one for a long time, but I remember we used flat bedsheets in a pleasing pattern one or two sizes larger than the intended bed and used a buttoned closure.

Thanks ladies!

I was thinking buttons as a fastener but velcro may be easier and perhaps more durable.

I was thinking of doing five pieces of fabric with a small square in the center and four rectangles on the outside, all different colurs of coordinating fabrics then a different set of colours on the other side so it would be reversible from front to back depending on the color moood I was in.

You can buy either upholstery zips, or the popper tape here in uk, we also have several large stores who sell sheeting fabric in plain and patterened 108" wide which is ample for duvets. As for the flap to tuck under the mattress, i would sew in a piece os fabric the width of duvet by the depth of the mattress plus 6", On the edge that is going to tuck under cut a square piece out the depth of the matress, sew the 2 cut ends together and elasticate all the way along so its like a fitted bed sheet.Hope this helps
