Oh really? So if an adult sat next to you screaming the entire flight you'd be o.k. with it? How about hitting you? Throwing stuff at you, or defecating right in the seat by you? There are standards that have to be met when flying, and babies/children should also have to meet certain standards. This is so funny. I never thought of it that way before. Obviously, kids can't always control their own issues when they are really small, and that's what their parents are for. For example, the parent could change the kid's diaper in a timely manner so they don't stink out the person next to them. BTW, the person that posted that comment has posted inflammatory stuff before. They are just trying to stir things up. And they obviously didn't read the whole post based on their response.
Save your own life - don't have kids!

Yeah I know Robotwit is a regular troll, but that WAS a point I wanted to bring up before and forgot to post. Obviously babies and small children have their physical and mental limits, but damn, if I'm paying over $200 for ANYTHING I'd like to have some rules to keep things pleasant.

On the "it/thing" point - when I said "put up with it"...I actually meant "put up with the situation" - I wasn't actually referring to the child. I hadn't considered the possibility of someone sitting next to me actually nursing a child all the way to Japan or HK...that would be dreadful... I actually see a similarity between fine restaurants and business/first class - you pay more - you're entitled to expect more - a higher level of service, nicer food, wine and ambience - in Australia when the parents of a baby took action against a fine restaurant after being ejected (with crying baby) - they lost - the reasoning:- people paying for a fine dining experience are entitled to receive just that - a fine dining experience - surely, the same reasoning applies to Business Class and the Opera... I agree it's not fair that people in Economy should have to put up with a screaming child all the way to their destination - not sure of the answer in this case...perhaps, a family seating area - still I know lots of great parents that keep their kids in line and they'd be VERY unhappy surrounded by unruly kids for hours on end... One of my colleagues "walked" all the way to London - he nursed and rocked his son for hours on end rather than allow him to scream and disturb other passengers...

Having been on flights with screaming babies, kids running wild in the aisles, and set back kicking brats, I would strongly favor a separate "family class" for people traveling with children under 10. Preferablby "family class" would have sound proof bulkheads separating it from the rest of the plane rather than just a thin curtain.

I am very late to this discussion, but just wanted to add my support, Deborah. I do not think babies and children should travel in business class. It's like I joined my airline's lounge club so that I could have a peaceful space to sit and work at the airport. Last time I was there, two toddlers were running around. I don't feel that is necessary, appropriate, or fair to the high-paying business people who are members.

I don't get the whole concept that someone paying more is more deserving of peace. I think kids and babies should be under control at all times and if their parents can't shut them up they should be required to sit in a "cry room" or something that is sound-proof. Just because i'm paying economy fare does not mean I should be subjected to stress-inducing (in me) screaming and ridiculous behaviour.
As for restaurants -- NO, babies should not be in nice restaurants and should stick to family ones.
Simone de Beauvoir dismissed motherhood as, "...'a strange mixture of narcissism, altruism, idle daydreaming, sincerity, bad faith, devotion and cynicism."

I absolutely agree with Pinecone about the paying more principal for peace. No way. They might as well allow chickens and goats in the economy seats, if it's just going to be anarchy if you're not rich. (I would love it if I could fly with my 80 lb dog though : ). I love the family area/soundproof or at least separated idea.
In restaurants if the baby becomes a nuisance the parent should have to take it outside. That seems reasonable, and what most decent parents know to do anyway. On planes they should be required to make every effort possible to keep the baby quiet no matter where they are seated. (which also seems like normal behavior anyway from what I've seen).
If that proves absolutely impossible, then they should be put on a list of babies that are not allowed to be planes until they're past a certain age. I can't even imagine what it would be like trying to fly with an ADD or ADHD child who can't be controlled. Nightmare!!

I'd rather much fly surrounded by chickens and goats than small children (and I suspect I'm not alone)! I'm enjoying reading everyone's suggestions. Unfortunately in the current climate having/being a child seems to give people a carte blanche to engage in anti-social behaviour which would be considered unacceptable otherwise.

Amen to that!
Also, "the Robot" pops in and out to TRY and [censored] off the childfree members here. It is not working anymore so I suspect that is why she only pops in so seldom. Her comments are so stupid..I anticipate her coming to the site and responding to give more entertainment to this site! I was disappointed with the last post; usually they crack me up but this one was boring!

Thanks for your feedback - one of my colleagues thinks that business class should be divided into true business class travellers and family travellers - or, a separate family class complete with change tables, travel cots etc. The latter sounds like a good idea - totally separate from other economy or business class travellers. The family class could be divided into economy, business and first class... I know more money shouldn't mean less noise but it usually does in my experience. I certainly agree with Frieda - usually you would expect parents to "sort out" any behaviour that might disturb other passengers/patrons/diners however, we've all shared the experience of parents standing back and letting their kids run riot... One of my DH's friends was flying to Bangkok a few years ago - he tells a horror story of 3 kids that literally "ran riot" all the way - the parents put on their headphones and watched movies while their kids wrestled in the aisles, screamed and cried etc. The steward spoke to the father several times only to be fobbed off with "what do you expect, they're kids".... He said the really scary bit was the mother was pregnant so he had visions of a future flight with 4 kids wrestling in the aisle! I guess that's why we need laws and rules in place - when commonsense, courtesy and consideration for others fails - it's time to take action.
