I am trying to find the name of the old-world wine storage systems that I can only describe as a large piece of wood with holes in it that you lean against a wall. The bottles insert into the holes at an angle which keeps the corks wet, but allows the labels to be seen. I found a site on google that markets these, but now I cannot find it again. I know there is a "name" for these leaning structures, and I know it starts with an "R" (not "rack" :-). Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Chloe, I am sure the item you link to is not that which is sought.

There are a couple of different styles of 'label view' racks

I think the rack sought may look essentially like a 2 x 4 with a series of inch diameter holes running down the center line of the wood. It looks nicer than that but imagine that 2 x 4 with all the rough corners shaped off, then stained and highly polished. Now we're talking furniture. (Not really "old world" tho')

The bottles are supported only by their necks. When you face this rack, you face the bottoms of the bottle.

A quick glance around the 'net did not reveal anyone selling large units of this type, but that was just a quick glance. You probably want to search for these. I know they were being marketed.

I must say tho' that the ones I saw marketed some few years ago were IMO very much over-priced. I wouldn't be too surprised if the companies producing them had not found sufficient market for $300 items to store 12 bottles of wine.

There is another type that is essentially two flats of metal one of which has small hooks mounted, the other large hooks. these are mounted in pairs, the large hook supports the "body" of the bottle, the smaller the neck.

beve, I notice that you say " you lean against a wall".

Of course, you would never want to put your wine in any kind of storage that was not secure from being toppled over. If you are going to lean such a thing against a wall, displaying 6 or 10 precious bottles, you better secure it to the wall.

Now I'm curious to see what this wine rack would look like.

Thanks to both Chloe and Frank for the replies. Frank is correct, the one Chloe suggested is not what I'm looking for - Franks description is closest, but the ones I'm looking for are probably 3-4 feet wide, and 4-5 feet tall, and they can be secured to the wall and the floor so they aren't in danger of toppling. If I ever get done packing up my house (moving) I will have to to go back to scouring the web and when I find the sites I saw previously, I will post them here. In the meantime, if anyone else can clue me to the proper name I'm looking for - starts with an "r" and has maybe 7 or 8 letters, sound off here please! Thenks much... Beve

I wasn't thinking of name yeaterday, but I have a thought now - tho'it's not a proper name.

You may have seen "riddling racks" which are sized much as you describe, do sit on an angle and would hold multiple bottles of wine.

These are used in the Champagne trade, in the traditional Methode Champenoise, for slowly forcing sediments into the neck of the bottle.

Frank - thanks! I knew the name started with an "r", and you are correct. There are some sites that offer for rediculous prices, I agree, but I believe there are also some pieces out there that are old (what I really want) that can be had very reasonable. I will let you all know how this turns out. thanks again... Beve

I really like these wine racks! Seems like they should be easy to make. Maybe from a vintage door. That would be neat... Hmmmm

In home decorating mode,
