(apart from Grand Theft Auto IV of course - 42 days to go) *bounce*

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

For those of you who aren't in the know, this one-off TV special, directed by Anthony Minghella (who sadly died yesterday) is based on the books by Alexander McCall Smith about Botswana's first lady private detective. It's due to air on Easter Sunday in the UK, and hopefully soon after that elsewhere..

The books are truly fantastic, and the author worked closely with the actors and production team to ensure the TV film version stays true to his vision.

The books have a quaint, gentle sense of humour, much like Michael Bond's Monsieur Pamplemousse series, and for a 60 year-old male Rhodesian/Scottish professor, he does an amazing job of writing Precious Ramotswe's strong, female and "traditionally-built" character. The books are clearly born out of his love for Botswana, where he spent many years, and he creates an amazingly vivid picture of Botswana life.

Anyone else looking forward to this? Must-see telly for all!

Lauren, I read that this was a pilot for a 13-episode series. I'm interested in it because it stars Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose. It is another joint venture between the BBC and HBO.

I've obtained the movie but I haven't watched it yet. Lauren, what did you think of it?

OK, I just read your article about the movie. I still haven't watched it yet because I was hoping my husband would watch it with me. Would it be fair to say that this is like a black "Rosemary and Thyme"?

I couldn't get on with the first 20 minutes or so I saw and actually gave up. Although in fairness I have hearing problems and sometimes struggle with accents.

For me it just didn't flow, but I'd love to hear what you thought?

haha Dani, that is utterly *perfect*! I love Rosemary and Thyme, and this is exactly as gentle and funny. I agree it takes a little time to get into the Botswana-speak (and of course this is more difficult if you have hearing problems) but this is definitely worth pursuing. If you're anything like me, you'll spend half of it shrieking in your hubby's ear.

I finally watched the movie last night and I liked it a lot. I can't wait for the series to start! The Botswana-speak will probably throw my husband a little, but we both love Jill Scott so I think he will stick it out for her.

The location shots were beautiful. I loved the accents. I also enjoyed the balance: they didn't shy away from the fact that there are poor people, but it wasn't a dark and depressing show. There were bits that made me shed a tear, but then there were others that made me laugh out loud. I would definitely recommend it.
