St. Pat's Day is tomorrow -- do you have a favorite Irish name?

Maybe...
something classic, like Bridget, Kevin or Ryan?
something trendy, like Aidan, Liam, Quinn?
something less common, like Killian or Brogan, or Oonagh?
something obscure, like Flannan, Finbarr, Aonghus?
something unmistakably Irish, like Aofie, Cian or Niamh?

Let me know!

I like Bridget and Bronwen (or is that a Welsh name?). I also love the distinctive Irish names Niamh (sounds like Neeve) and Siobhan (sounds like Shavorn), and also Sian/Sion (girl/boy version of the same name), and Maebh. I worked with some Irish women, one called (hope I get the spelling right now!) Aorlaighth (sounds like Orla), and the other Catriona (Katrina).

Names like those only work in Ireland and some parts of the UK, like London, where most people are used to the spellings. I wouldn't give a baby an Irish name elsewhere unless you anglicised the spelling (like Neve Campbell).

I like Aoife (pronounced EE-fa). I kind of latched onto it when I went to Ireland a couple of years ago. Maybe if I ever have a Celtic breed female dog to name someday...

Saw this topic and had to post smile I have a 10 yr old Connor and an 8 yr old Quinnlin (seems we didn't know how to spell Quinlan). They were almost Keegan and Aidan but we changed both at the last minute. If they had been girls we had Siobhan and Maeve

This is my area of love. <3 My son's name is Seamus Padraig Scott, so obviously I love those names. Plus, *my* name is Niamh, and I love my name. We also love:

Conan
Caoimhe
Siobhan
Maeve
Saoirse
Aengus
Calum <3
Brigid
...and many more.

Our first daughter will be Rhiannon Caoimhe Siobhan. Next son will be either Conan Iain Alasdair or Conan Alasdair Iain. And second girl will be Moira Brigid Gwenhwyfar. We love Celtic names. wink
