I have a large quantity of old jeans and other denim. I want to recycle them into an area rug, but would love some suggestions. I have done a braided placemat--to test my abilities at braiding, but I am not sure this is what I want to do with the denim. I also considered piecing knitted squares together (have made rugs using old t-shirts this way), but again, not sure that is the most practical. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Instead of rugs have you thought of making them into 12"squares and sewing together for a denim blanket. Inside is a blanket that you then tie off each square to keep in place. Use it at the beach...they are great. A friend of mine did that to hers.

Are you sure you need a rug? And is blue (assuming your jeans are blue) what you want? If so, go for it. I think a predominately blue denim rug with some contrasting white denim worked in would be nice in the right room.

Blue can be overpowering to decorate with, but that's another story. Working some white in would probably keep it from screaming BLUE at you! Also, the nature of denim sort of automatically gives a softness to the blues used in jeans. If you already have a room with other touches of blue, the new rug would probably complement it.

It seems like a braided, denim rug would be very durable, too. You go, girl!

Hi, Have you considered a peg loom? They are cheap to buy, and your rug would be done in no time. A friend of mine made a denim rug out of old jaens on one and it was GORGEOUS!
