Does anyone use nicknames for breastfeeding? I used to ask my son if he wanted booby when I thought he was hungry. It turned out to be quite embarrassing when he started talking. We would be in public and he would shout "mommy I want Booby!"

This is a very old post, but an interesting topic. I thought I'd post my thoughts to "bump" it up and would love some additional discussion.

For my part, my daughter who is 15 months, asks for "Milk" or "Nurse." I have found signing to be a really great tool for extended breastfeeding, as she'll sign milk to me when she is hungry, which keeps her from just walking up and lifting my shirt at inopportune moments!

I have heard people use "nummies," but in general, I am a fan of calling things what they are.

I use sign language too (ASL and more specifically, Signing Time). It is nice because my children started signing to me between 12 and 13 months so I knew what they wanted very early. It is also nice to have this "Quiet" language when they get older and talking about going to the bathroom. Also, when your child needs to be quiet but wants to tell you they need a diaper change, a book read, or that they recognizes something in their little world. I love signing with my kids.

My experience has been similar.. and good point about the needing to be quiet thing. The potty sign is a great one.

We call nursing "mama baba". My dd used to sign for it and say "mama baba" but now that she is down to nursing just once before bedtime, she just says it or I say it and she says a very happy, "yes!" smile.

All the best,
