Do you have any failsafe fashion tips that you learnt from your mother/grandmother?

My mum passed on the following golden tips to me that I follow to this day:

1. Never, ever wear white socks with black trousers (that goes for guys and girls)
2. Clear nail varnish works wonders on sealing small holes in pantyhose
3. Keep accessories simple; wear statement earrings or a statement necklace but never both at the same time

Mom always told us girls to wear only light lipsticks - never dark red!

And, "Always wear clean underwear because you never know when you might have an accident and have to go to the doctor." (that is what her mother told her).

Always wear a slip under your dress or skirt.

No mini-skirts, EVER! Remember to be modest at all times.

Never wear white before Memorial day or after Labor Day. I remember it was mainly for shoes and handbags.
Does anyone still follow this rule?

Here are a few fashion tips my mom gave me:

1. Like Phyllis' mom said: wear a slip under your skirt.
2. Wear a necklace or a pair of earrings to shift people's attention to your pretty face (yep, she told us that, haha!)
3. Have 3 kinds of dress styles: corporate (for work), casual and formal.
4. Have different styles of shoes to go with the clothes.
5. Go neutral - they never go out of style.

The only "fashion" advice my mom ever gave me was:

Foundation garments need to fit you properly, otherwise nothing will look good. A good bra is worth it's weight in gold.

People should only be able to smell your fragrance if they hug you. If they can smell it walking by, you're wearing too much.

You're not ready until you've got your lipstick on.

My mum would agree about the lipstick - in fact another tip (more of a beauty one though), she always uses the same lipstick both on her lips and her cheeks for a subtle rosy glow.

I do it myself to this day - looks good and saves me buying blush!

Mom's advice:

1. Never go out without a little bit of makeup.
2. You don't have to match your shoes and purse.
3. If you have to pull on it to keep it in place then don't wear it!

I love the last one! Its so true.

Not sure if this is exactly fashion advice but my mom told me hundreds of times "Hold in your stomach." "Stand up straight."
