hey all,

about to head to an easter brunch with a couple we've known forever who have 2 kids (4 year old and 1 year old). just found out that the other guests joining us are our friends' neighbors and their small child. awesome. first of all, i don't really like new social situations. i have no info about these people and i loathe small talk. (i know several people on this board share this opinion!) i'm a really social person when i want to be, but not with new people with whom i have nothing in common. maybe i'll get lucky, but i'm already anticipating non-stop mommy-talk and a possible bingo or two. the friend knows we're not having kids, although i think people can't really accept that we mean never. i don't think she'll bingo me, but i'm sure we'll get a question or comment from the neighbor.

wish me luck!

Good Luck fbrittt! I'll be thinking about you and sending good thoughts your way.

PS. I hate situations like this too. A couple we have been friends with for 20 years invited us to a birthday party for the husband. The kicker was that they were going to have it at their neighbor's house across the street. (Who knows why?) We made up and excuse and didn't go. Another neighbor of theirs had bingoed us and argued with us over politics at one of their BBQ's, so we didn't feel like dealing with it again.

Good Luck fbritt! Let us know how it goes. I can totally relate to the dread you are feeling. I can't help it, but I so dislike spending holidays with people I don't know very well (even though I feel guilty about it!). When we first moved here, some neighbors invited us to spend Thanksgiving with them. We went of course, and they were so nice and everything, but there's something about being with 'strangers' on a holiday that makes me feel really lonely. I would much rather stay in my pj's all day long at home and cuddle on my cats & dog and not force conversations and fake interest in people I don't know. But of course it's rude and mean not to love sharing the holidays with neighbors, strangers, etc...

Let us know how your day goes! At least you are great friends with the couple you're visiting so that might make it a little better smile

Fbritt, good luck and sending positive thoughts your way!! I totally understand how you feel. I can certainly force myself to do the small talk thing and ask all sorts of questions to keep the convo going, but that isn't me really. I am shy and quiet (around people I'm not used to) so it is hard to force myself to be all chatty chatty...small talk with someone new that I have nothing in common with just isn't my idea of a super great time.

Hopefully your good friends will help keep things interesting and maybe you will actually find the new people interesting. Good luck and let us know how it turns out smile

How can you prove whether at this moment we are sleeping, and all our thoughts are a dream; or whether we are awake, and talking to one another in the waking state?

thanks for your good luck vibes! the other couple was sick so it ended up just being the 4 of us, plus our friends' kids. i was really relieved and it was super mellow. it was, however, still mostly focused on the kids. i like them and all, but it was kind of boring. at least we're really comfortable with these friends, so if i'm really quiet and mellow, no one cares. there was one big "yuck" moment though:

right after we ate our easter brunch (tables still had food remnants and plates weren't cleared yet), the father says to his son, did you tell "uncle" T what you did??? we look with anticipation expecting some great accomplishment at pre-school, or cool adventure their son went on. the boy smiles shyly and then dad says, "well, we've been trying to get J (the kid) to poop on the toliet, so he's been keeping his diaper on while he has to poop, but standing over the toliet to practice. WELL, the other day when he was doing this, some of the poops fell out of the diaper and into the toliet, SOOOOO he made his first poop in the potty!"

uch. trying to feign excitement and mask disgust over this was not an easy task.

Gross! You'd just eaten. Hello?

Glad the other family wasn't there though. I had much fun building leggo animal houses with my niece. smile
