No, I wouldn't say they're alike, though I've never been to England. I'm married to a Cornishman (he came here when he was eight years old) and, experiencing his large family over thirty years, I'd say that we are really different.
My husband went back to England two years ago and visited the little cottage in Relubbus, Cornwall, where he spent the first four years of his life during WW2. I'm itching to get there one day to experience the history first hand.
I think we do have a love of sport in common and a lot of us still want to hold on to the tradition of monarchy - I really don't think that will remain here for much longer though.
Our landscapes, vegetation, etc., are entirely different and most Australians would drive rather than catch public transport. The weather also determines a difference in the way we live; most of us find outdoor activities pleasurable because the weather's so beautiful (although we're in a heatwave at present and badly need rain!). We have a tropical climate to the North but Tasmania, the farthest South, is far more temperate and many people liken it to a little England.
I'd also love to see an Italian culture forum here. I experienced two weeks of Italy last year and at present we have a young man from Milan staying with us - his Mother is cockney and his father Italian.
Cheers,
Savanah
