Just saw this at Yahoo News: Woman faces fine for dyeing poodle pink
BOULDER, Colo. - A Boulder woman facing a $1,000 fine for dyeing her poodle pink has hired a lawyer to fight the charge in court.
Joy Douglas says she dyed Cici, her white miniature poodle, to call attention to breast cancer. She says she used beet juice and Kool-Aid.
She was ticketed March 1 under a Boulder ordinance that makes it illegal to dye animals. The ordinance is designed discourage people from dyeing rabbits and chicks for Easter.
Douglas had a court hearing scheduled Tuesday, but the judge postponed it until April after she said she has hired a lawyer.
Douglas took Cici with her Tuesday but had to leave her outside the courthouse. What do you think about this? When you see dogs with dyed hair/fur, what do you think - Cute? Kitschy? Cruel?

Well, she dyed the dog to make a point, it seems, and she used vegetable dye.... But this habit that the "rich, famous and brainless" have, of colouring their bichon frizes pink, with pretty blue toenails and jewelled collars - is gross. The ways dogs communicate with one another is already compromised by the surgical interventions and breeding anomalies we insist on imposing on breeds - taking it that step further and dyeing a dog as if it's some inter-gallactic canine freak is simply making matters worse.

She broke the law, she should pay the fine. Dying that poor animal pink was just silliness and vanity with a lame excuse tacked on the end. Turning a dog pink does nothing to promote breast cancer awareness and she knows it.

If I wanted to bring attention to breast cancer I would have gotten a dog sweater for the dog with a big ribbon on it ...

I think I'm with Lisa on this one. They make tons of cute clothes for people who want to dress their dogs.
I myself only subject my golden retriever to a bandana, which he loves having put on since I make a huge fuss over him. I'm sure they have breast cancer ribbon bandanas for sale online too.
Even though the vegetable dies were natural (how natural is Kool Aid?) the dog could still have had a skin reaction. Most dogs, cats, etc., have skin that is more sensitive than humans to irritants.

If it is harmless dye, harmless to the anamal that is, then I don't have an issue.
But that said, My personal preference is that I dislike this silly craze for small dogs. Animals are NOT accessories. They are living beings who need to be cared for. I would never have one just for fashion. An animsl is a responsibility.

Have you seen the frou-frou nonsense they do to dogs for top-ranked dog shows (whiteners, brighteners, hair spray, etc.)? Not much difference here in the action, the only difference is the cause for the action.

There are many ways to make a point or bring attention to something. Using an animal to do so is not the best way.
Taking on the responsibility of a pet means you should care for and nurture that animal. Pets depend on us for their total care. They depend on us like our children do. I would never paint my grandson pink to prove a point or advertise anything.

I agree with you, Phyllis, personally. But that means someone's going to have to draw the line in the sand and make it very clear.
If dying an animal (whatever color)) is against the law in this instance, then it has to be against the law in all other instances (like for dog shows).
I don't think we can logically say its okay in one but not the other, regardless of the reason its being done.

True, Lynn. If there is a law, it should be very clear cut and explicit.
An animal, in my opinion, should not be dyed for any reason.
