I watched the Extreme Makeover show tonight and saw that they were helping a family of seven who lived in a home less than 600 square feet. The parents seemed like nice people who try to do the best they can, and it is always nice to see someone in need getting help. But, what I thought interesting was the fact that these parents knew they lived in this small house where it was hard to make ends meet. Yet they STILL proceeded to have FIVE children. And I'm sure the last three or four (or maybe all of them) took away any tiny chance they had of getting a larger home. What were they thinking?!?

One more example of how people do not put thought into the decision to have children. Others say we are selfish because we do not want children. However, at least we do think of all the facts first...can we afford them, how will they change our lives, etc. Part of being a responsible parent is knowing if you can provide a suitable home for your children, along with clothing and food for them. If you can't, then don't have the child...That seems simple enough.

How can you prove whether at this moment we are sleeping, and all our thoughts are a dream; or whether we are awake, and talking to one another in the waking state?

This really bugs me too! I watch these extreme makeover programmes and it's always about really poor, struggling families but they have a heap of kids. And I always thinking to myself "what on earth made you have kid number 3, 4 and 5???".

"But we WANTED to have seven children! It's our DREAM! GOD will provide!" Or if he doesn't, apparently Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will!

Gimme a break...

I can't stand this show either. Yes, it's nice to help struggling people out, but I wish the struggling people would have made more responsible decisions in the first place so they would not be in these bad situations...

We need a show that rewards people like us for being responsible, earth friendly and intelligent! smile

Gack, I know. I'm getting totally turned off by all the HGTV shows here, they all have long lingering shots of the baaaaaaabbbbyyyy and "family friendly" out the yin yang.

I mean seriously, why do you need fabulous new designer everything when you have a toddler? God knows they're only going to wreck it anyway, why bother? Do it when they turn 18 and move out ...

I was in a waiting room at the car repair place the other day. They had the show about the family with eight kids (they had twins, then had sextuplets, while the twins were still little) on the TV in the waiting room. Even though the sound was down, I could tell that that parents were completely wiped out. You could read the exhaustion on their faces! In one scene the dad came home from work and you could see the shell-shock on his face, coming home to that kind of wild scene. Their house looked like a daycare center. I would just die if that happened to me.

I hate Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I stopped watching this show after the first one. Pushing that sentimental [censored] at the masses is just ridiculous.

Why, oh why, are we rewarding people for making poor choices?

And the stuff they give these people? If they need so much help, why aren't they finding jobs for them? Or funding further education? No-one needs plasma TVs, laptops, granite countertops and leather furniture to have a better life.

After a while, the design on all these houses are so cookie-cutter.

I can't watch it either..It ticks me off to see the families with a [censored] load of kids. Then they wonder why their life is so hard and bad and thet are so freakin' broke. I don't mind the one's where another family took in another family members children b/c their parents died or something and they need a bigger house.

I am so tired of the whinning from parents about how broke they are! Quit having kids!!

I can say that I've NEVER seen more than just the commercial for Extreme Makeover: anything shows. Just hearing about it, filtered as it is, wants me to throw something (made out of Nerf material) at a TV smile

I watch it every week because I like to see the houses, and sometimes they have deserving people on. Sometimes, though, we just fast-forward to the end.

But just think of all of the families in the exact situation who AREN'T going to get help from a TV show. What are they going to do?

When I watch that show I really worry that it will encourage people to have a huge litter of kids because they think someone will help them if (when) they get into trouble.

Oh, and Cookiecody- the show is called John and Kate Plus Eight. It's actually gone on for a few seasons. There's another show on that channel about another family with tons of kids, too. The parents are so ridiculously naive that it makes me nauseous.
