When I was in my mid-twenties I got together with a cousin who I saw very rarely. We were up late just watching tv when she started talking about how badly she wanted a baby. She said that diaper commercials made her cry etc. I had nothing to say to that. I just couldn't identify. Clearly she never sensed my ambivilance. Every time I saw her for the next three years or so I got updated on how she still was trying- not in an obnoxious way, but it was obviously the MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD to her. It alwalys left me mildly annoyed, since she otherwise had a full and interesting life and I would gladly have talked about anything else (I think these people wear baby blinders)- her sucessful career, her relationship with her husband, their cross country bike trips ...

So I was really happy for her when she finally conceived. I went to the baby shower and wore my best smile. At the first family gathering after the baby was born I was doing my best to be nice and still avoid the infant. Keep in mind she had five years to notice my disinterest. She was basically chasing me from room to room with the baby, and as I was trying to get away from her she loudly announced "don't you want to hold the baby?"
Put on the spot, I blurted out the first thing that came to me-
"Could be catching!"

LOL!!! That's hilarious....ha haaaaa Vespertine, you sound like me...I always want to avoid holding the baby. It was hard with my BFF...even though she respects that I don't want kids, she doesn't realize the extent of my phobia of babies and toddlers. She is slowly learning though...and thankfully, not being offended that I am not thrilled about holding her precious one.

How can you prove whether at this moment we are sleeping, and all our thoughts are a dream; or whether we are awake, and talking to one another in the waking state?

Heh, what an excellent answer. I'll have to tuck that away for future use. Of course, sometimes I don't have the chance to say no, as people just put the baby in my arms and it's either hold it or let it fall on the floor.

I find ALWAYS having a wine glass in my hand has worked really well! They can't just plop the baby into your arms. And keep standing, you won't have a lap then either.

i don't mind holding other people's babies.i like them in small doses. what i dont' like is when people think that just b/c i'm holding a baby that i automatically like to have one. my DH though doesn't like holding anyone's baby and i definitely can understand that. nobody should try to force anyone to hold a baby or even interact with them.

This is so true. I'll hold my friends' babies (not strangers - that's just creepy), but I get the worst bingoes of all time when people see me holding one. Like hugging a small life form to your body makes you want one, or its smell will make me change my mind about having children. Hah! I'd much rather hold my fluffy kitty. Sometimes I avoid holding babies simply because of the stupid bingoes - I love your answer, Vespertine!

Babies and small children have always made me uncomfortable. In the same way that birds make me uncomfortable. Like- I have no trouble admiring a pretty parrot, but parrots tend to be unpredictable, noisy, messy and smelly. They make me nervous. I don't want to hold your parrot, and if your kid is going to bite, please keep it in its cage.

Also, if I ever did have a baby, I just can't see demanding that a bunch of people put their germy damn hands on it- WTH??

My fiance and I are just like this! And I don't normally want to hold a baby - but show me a puppy or kitten and I go crazy wanting a cuddle! :o)
