From an outsider looking in and with what we get in the media over here: It appears to us that USA is not ready for a black president. The republicans know this and must be thrilled to have Obama the leading democrat. If he is the democrat winner then the democrats will lose. However, if Clinton wins the nomination then she will run as an equal to the republican white man and the democrats have a chance. Bush is painted in media as a bumbling idiot and warmonger.

Hi Ladies -

I appreciate your joining in and giving your opinion. Several of you have indicated that it is difficult to give an opinion based on an improbable hypothetical question and I completely agree with you on that fact. However, the reason for that hypothetical question being phrased as it has been is to level the playing field and really get a true opinion on the question of whether you would vote for a Woman for President. It is to find out if we have evolved enough to view a female as just as strong and capable as a man when it really counts - on a level playing field. Women have climbed dramatically in business over the many long years that they have been fighting to be seen as equals to men, however, in some instances they are still not deemed equal with regard to promotions and salary and are often still viewed as too emotional by men to fill the top spot in business scenarios. So my question again is to find out if when push comes to shove, do women actually feel that way too.

And Thanks to you Felicity for the view of one outside looking in. It's always very enlightenting to hear that viewpoint on any topic.

So again, for new readers, I'm asking my hypothetical question - if all things were equal between two candidates running for President except gender, would you vote for the man by default because we've always had a man as president; or would you vote for the woman because it's time to bring a strong woman out from behind the men? Remember there are no wrong answers here, just the opportunity to weigh in on a very timely question due to the fact that for the first time ever a woman is a viable consideration to fill the office of President of the USA smile

I still voice my disagreement with ever choosing male-vs-female. It's meaningless to me. I always vote on issues and there will always be an issue difference. I would never choose based on 4 freckles or 5 freckles. To me that is what you're asking, to choose based on freckle count.

As far as other questions, I have a HUGE book on "women and leadership" -

I think that all things being equal, I might choose a woman candidate over a man, just to break through into the next realm.

I've said all along that I thought a wise move for a strong [male] candidate would have been to have a female or minority running mate for VP...this would allow the public to gradually become used to the idea. Of course it's long overdue to have women and/or minorities in the oval office, but it's terribly difficult to break the long-standing political opinion that the President of the United States must be a white male. Getting a President into office with a female or minority VP would be GROUND-BREAKING... and I think, once acceptable, would better pave the path for the future candidates.

I believe it's unfortunate to have to choose between Hillary and Obama. It might have been better to have one [new] choice this term and another next time.
Unfortunately, again...you are asking an American public to set aside their beliefs [that the Pres must be white/male], and say to themselves, "Which is the lesser of the evils- a woman or an African-American man?". They are also asking women/minorities to choose, when one choice would be easier to manage.

Many thanks to Julie for a very insightful response. First there are no real alternate choices other than a white male President and then there are two new interesting choices, a female candidate and a minority candidate. I guess this could be a perfect example of feast or famine. At any rate this is an exciting time in politics in the US and a very important time to exercise your right to vote.

It certainly appears this question is being considered in a big way based on the results of the primary results. Put your thinking cap on if you're going to be voting in PA and ask yourself and is it time for a woman President?

Again I say, well yeah, why not?

It would depend on the woman running smile I know everyone has an opinion but in this race I am backing Hillary, I like what she stands for and I was also lucky enough to personally see her here in our little town. I think she has what it takes and she is also very gracious (saw it with my own eyes) to people. I think a woman can be president and I also agree we do need a womans touch at this time. This is a really exciting and interesting time, the suspense is really going to mount with this election.

I also like much of what Hillary stands for and think that it is time for a woman to run the big show. Just think about it. Most women have a multitude of talents and skills, and are generally adept at nurturing. This country is so tired and sad right now it really needs to be nurtured. And while it is healing and returning to a more vibrant healthier existence it needs an experienced leader with skills and talents and proven strength to steer us out of the gloomy storms of recession and war.

Tell us what you think. No wrong answers here, just an opporutnity to be heard on a very timely important decision that people across this country are deciding right now. Is it time for a woman President?
