I like to be in control - so, I'm usually driving. I can assure you no one has ever complained about me cutting something short and racing home to the baby... Mind you...they sometimes find themselves at a nice coffee shop or wine bar...they know the risks when they get into my vehicle!

A few months ago we had plans to go on a hike w/ another couple...they picked us up and as we were pulling in to the parking area for the hike, the girl said "yeah they'll have to find a replacement at work for me in about 6 months because I'm having a baby!" My first thought was #$%^ just take me back home! Needless to say we all had to talk about babies for the entire time... Oh, that would ANNOY me. To have a wonderful day in the wilderness spoiled by baby talk. At least my fave hiking partner is more anti baby than me! so at least I know that will never happen with her!! :-)

Our friends did this to us too! Our last childless couple! Over the years they'd sometimes say, "If we have kids..." but they were in their early 40's and we figured the ship had sailed.
So, we hadn't seen them in a few months and he calls and invites us to dinner. We show up at thier house and she's like 6 or 7 months pregnant! He never told us when he called. Her weight goes up and down and she carries it in her middle normally, so I wasn't sure. I should have been sure by looking at her, but since I have a weight problem myself, I am very sensitive to that sort of thing.
When we all finally got into our own cars to go to the restaurant, I had to ask my husband if she was pregnant. I was just so shocked. Later that evening we were discussing the fact that he didn't tell us when he called us and she said, "Oh! Did you do that to them too? Why did you do that?" At least she had some sense.
His reply was, "I expected the two of you to show up and Kim to be pregnant too!" Huh????? We've said we weren't having kids since the day we me them. Wishful thinking or what?
Wanna know the worst part? We got a couple shower invite which we declined. The kid is like a year and a half and we haven't seen them yet and they invite us to a BBQ at thier house. When she answers the door... Yeah, you guessed it. Pregnant again! The hubby never wants to see them again. Can't much blame him. Grrr....

Cherry Red, your story reminds me of the time when we went to see our financial advisor. I swear the woman is in her 50's. We only see her once a year, and we were shocked when she walked out to see us and she was VERY pregnant. It was such a shock!

Cherry Red - that has happened to me so many times over the years. I started to think that no one was genuinely CF - that everyone caves or changes their mind at a certain age. My biggest shock - a friend who was adamantly CF (or so I thought)- she actually claimed to dislike children - for years I listened to her complain about "the obnoxious kids" at the next table etc. Well, she gets pregnant at 44 - she was 45 when the baby was born...people in her circle of friends are still reeling... Women are having children later and later - many "put off" having kids now until they're in their 40s... A colleague just had her first baby at 46...so, IMO you can't always assume someone is CF if they don't have kids at a certain age - it could be they are still trying, about to start or still waiting/putting it off... I wonder when it is safe to assume - a 54 year old Victorian woman is expecting her first child later this year AND, women are going to Cape Town to have menopause reversed so they can have children in their 50s and 60s...

I know! This also extends the bingo period, which is especially annoying, until you're at an age when it's highly risky to have kids, yet people will STILL bother you about it, and cite their ever-growing list of acquaintances who have done it after 40, like that should make EVERYONE do it.

Question: BFF? When I was in highschool, this was super girly tween talk for "best friends forever" (which I always found rather nauseating) Is that what everyone's saying here? O_o Seems a bit...Weird. I mean, sure, best friends...But "best friends forever", when some people are saying that they aren't friends with them anymore?

BFF (yes, best friends forever) is a really popular shortcut for texting and IMing I think.

I've always assumed that it stood for "best female friend", but evidently I'm mistaken!
