My older sister and I both suffer from bumpy skin on our upper arms. We think it might be due to calcium (lack of or too much of). Her husband says it is neither, that we are just growing feathers because that is how chicken skin looks when you pluck it. What causes these little bumps?

LOL! I did not know what to expect when I read the title of the post!
Well, look on the bright side - if grow some feathers then can spread your arms and fly!

As far as I know it could be a lot of things: dry skin, eczema, psoriosis. I get them too, mostly in the winter. I make sure to loofa and moisturize daily. The one thing I found that helps immensly, is cortizone cream.
Hope this helps

Also keep in mind it might be an allergic rash. I know if I use a shampoo I'm sensitive to, I get little bumps on my upper arms because that's where the shampoo most contacts the skin during the shower. If I switch to a different shampoo / conditioner it goes away. Often I notice this more in the winter because my skin is dryer and more sensitive to this sort of thing.

Hey - thanks for the info gals! That helps me to know where to start checking some things out. I will try your suggestions. "I believe I can fly - I believe I can touch the sky."

Hi Phyllis - Re upper-arm bumps: I often listen to Dr. Bob Marshall's radio show. He's a clinical nutritionist from www.healthline.ccIf I remember correctly, he says they can be caused by lack of essential fatty acids. So, more olive, flaxseed, sesame, borage oils may help.

I get them too. Always seem to be there and I don't think it's an allergy. I think mine are keratosis pilaris- "The skin cells that normally flake off as a fine dust from the skin form plugs in the hair follicles. That's very interesting Laura, I hadn't heard of keratosis pilaris. Thanks for the website and product tip.
P.S. Cute cat! Reminds me of one I had named Gizmo.
