Wow! Incredible! And then when their babies are born with something wrong with them, they expect free medical care too. Disgusting.

Oy.
That's really scary. Touch wood I've never been in a public hospital, but I hear that it's quite the experience, no matter which country you're in.
It's interesting that doctors in Canada are now starting to vet their patients - if you're elderly, overweight, or have a history of serious medical issues, good luck finding a GP. They won't touch you if they think you're going to demand too much time and attention. In their defence, the doctors say that they're getting tired of idiot people who neglect their bodies, smoking, drinking, and playing fast and loose with medication, and then come in demanding that the doctor fix them when their health starts to fail.
I'm wondering if pregnant women are going to find themselves in the same boat if they keep carrying on like this. Entitlemom, indeed ...

It's just so sad. It also makes me want to take better care of myself so that I don't have to go to a hospital. It's not just maternity wards that are like this.

I totally agree Feebee - sends shivers down my spine... I'm actually amazed at women taking risks particuarly, with their first child...no one really knows what they are facing with a first delivery... If a woman wants a natural birth - that's her choice...but surely, you'd appreciate that most woman can't give birth naturally... To put yourself in a birthing facility that does not provide epidurals, obstetricians on hand is unwise and possibly, dangerous IMO... I spoke to my mother over the phone last night - she told me that a family friend had an appalling time with her first delivery - the child was about to be born when the midwife realized the baby was breech - too late for a caesarean, the mother was left with shocking birth injuries. I'm not a Doctor or midwife but IMO that should have been picked up before she went into labour...someone was negligent IMO... I spoke to this woman shortly before we left Australia and she told me she had her aromatherapy oils, scented candles and CD's ready for the birth...I'm sorry but these things end up "out the window" when things get really bad. It's ambitious/naive to think they'll be enough to see you through - most women need some pain relief/assistance. I also, read an Article recently about water births...it's difficult to monitor babies and examine mothers when they're underwater...if the mother gets into difficulty they have to get her out of the birthing pool...apparently, several babies have died during these sorts of deliveries. Why would you put yourself and your child at risk? It doesn't make sense to me... I don't like hospitals but if I had given birth, I know exactly where I would have been...in hospital with my own obstetrician... How frightening to find you're not coping with no Doctor or Anesthetist in sight OR, insisting on a water birth or natural birth only to end up in a traumatic, life threatening situation for yourself and your child. Sorry - bit of a rant...I don't understand.... It's early in the morning here - just after 5am - I must have jet lag - can't sleep so thought I'd chat to my friends on line...

Wow. These stories are scary. I've actually not really seen it this way, and in the past been a (complacent) proponent of natural birthing. My SIL even had one at home in her bathtub without even a midwife!! She read about it in books beforehand, and believed that a lot of the pain comes from fear, so was able to handle it herself after hearing that. Yes, I know (!!!). Anyway, I at least thought it made sense to try to avoid an epidural, because those increase risks for the baby too. So, either way you're screwed!!!
I have to say, your title for this thread Feebee says it perfectly.
And Deborah, your stories have definitely swayed my belief in home births. Personally, I would never do it. I live about 30 mins. from a hospital, but a baby has been born in my house about 20 years ago. I know the guy!! Anyway, sorry for the tangent.

I think if you want to do it the 'natural' way you should still do it in a hospital so that professionals can take over if things get bad. I think any parent that chooses to have a child at home is negligent, and if there are negative results, the parents should be found at least mostly to blame. Of course, the person who ends up in court is the midwife, with the parents all indignant like they had NO idea what risks they were taking.

There's a lot to be said about having signed and notarized forms that outline the risks. Of course, that wouldn't stop every suit, but just reading something like that, before even signing it, might make some common sense spring into the minds of soon-to-be-parents.

It also makes me want to take better care of myself so that I don't have to go to a hospital. It's not just maternity wards that are like this. Too true. I know an elderly man (89) and his cousin (94) who were recently admitted to the same hospital. His condition has deteriorated so much since he arrived that I will be surprised if he lives through the week. He was doing so much better on his own, but he thought he had a heart attack and called an ambulance. Now he's stuck in ICU on a ventilator. His 94-year-old cousin was admitted for a cut on her leg. She died on Saturday, who knows what from exactly. I'm not family so they won't tell me anything. Makes me hope I never have to rely on a hospital to "fix" me.
