We've all heard Asian stereo types. Which ones have you heard that you know for a fact aren't true?

For example: My boyfriend is Chinese and he drives just fine. grin So I know that the myth that Asians can't drive is completely false. lol

I do not like stereotyping, but here goes: I have often heard that "Asian women are pushy and rude, especially in stores."

I have had many Asian friends and have a Japanese daughter-in-law and find that Asian women are very polite, gentle and graceful.

See now I would have thought the opposite stereotype - that asian women are meek, mild and never speak out for themselves ...

No, Lisa, not in my experience. The ones I know are very confident, strong in themselves, yet gentle and understanding to others. I do believe, though, that in ancient times, maybe even up to early in the last century, that Asian women were dominated by the male and kept very submissive, which would have made them timid and meek. Today's Asian woman is far stronger yet still retains that grace they are famous for.

The only stereotype that comes to mind is that "all Asians are very intelligent". I guess that's not such a bad one to have, as far as stereotypes go!

And it does seem to be one that is fairly true to form - at least all of my friends that are of Asian ethnicity are.

Michelle, I agree that they are very intelligent. I think the importance of education was instilled in them at very young ages.

Harmony,

That stereotype is probably the most true of them all. But the fact that they are smart, in my opinion, doesn't have to do with their race (which is what most people assume), rather it is based on their culture. In other words, people of Asian ethnicity are not born that way but grow to become intelligent.

All East Asian cultures place a huge emphesis on education and hard work and as their people migrate to other countries, the hard work and determination comes with them and these traditions carry on for generations. It is a fantastic trait and one of the things I most enjoy about East Asian cultures
