Whenever I get an urge to maybe have kids, or that having kids wouldn't be a bad idea, or I'm overcome by kodak moments I come across stories like this and the urge vanishes very fast.

OMG.

We had a case in Alberta pretty much the same. The daughter was 12(!) and dating a 21 year old, and when her parents told her to call it off, the two of them murdered the entire family, and then sat on the lawn and had a picnic.

I might have hated my parents with a passion on occasion, but I would never have contemplated killing them. What the hell is wrong with these kids? And then the bleeding hearts will get in there and cry about how they're just "childdddddren" and "didn't understand what they were doing ..." and say they should be out of jail in two years.

BS to that. Lock them up and throw away the keys.

I also feel sorry for the dog...

That story is just awful. It's also the best birth control EVER.

And you'll most likely never know the mentality of everyone involved. Were these good caring parents and it just went horribly wrong. That is what scares me, what if I do the best I can and because of some other influence my kid does something terrible. You have no control over a separate person and you can't choose a kid like you can choose a husband.

How sad. This seems to be happening a lot more often.

True that. You can't divorce the kid when it turns out to be a waste of oxygen, either ...

Pikasam,

Technically, that isn't entirely true. A child can be put into foster care. Or a parents can request emancipation through the courts for children over a certain age which allows them to give up all parental rights and responsibilities for that child.

Heather - that's interesting - under what circumstances would the courts allow you to become emancipated from your child? I can understand a child wanting to be separated from its parents, but how would it work the other way around? Why would, or should, you be allowed to abdicate your responsibility? (I'm assuming the age would be higher than the age of majority?)
