Hello!

My husband took a picture of our "chooks" yesterday in our courtyard off our kitchen. We had Magpies, Sulphur-crested cockatoos and Crested Pidgeons all pecking around together.

Further out in the front paddock geese were doing the same. Two days ago we had two whistling kites overhead and the magpies were doing their darndest to shoo them away.

We live in country Victoria on six acres and now that our trees are more established after nine years, we are seeing more species come in. We have a family of Blue Wrens and a small contingency of the common Sparrow. During Summer when our bushes are flowering, we have five or six species of honeyeaters that mill around the garden. Occasionally we have a dreaded butcherbird come in. The King Parrots visit briefly each day for a special treat of sunflower seeds and feed from our hands and Corellas and Galahs and Kookaburras also consider this "home". In Spring we have the willy wagtails and swifts and in Winter we see the Flame Robin.

The next door property has a series of lakes and ornithologists have counted 92 species that live in or visit this immediate region.

We are truly fortunate to experience on a daily basis all of the activities of our feathered friends.

Cheers,
Savanah

Oh, Savanah! That sounds wonderful! Australia is SO far from northern central USA that I fear I will never get to see those birds that come by your property. Can you post the picture he took?(If so, you are better than me, I haven't figured out how to do that yet!)
Happy birding!

Hi Claybird,

Lovely to hear from you. Well, if I could, I would post the photo. I haven't had a good look around either to figure out how. I did start a blog a couple of years ago but haven't used it for anything. I'll have to go look for it, then I can upload pictures to it and refer people to it to see them.

We call our crested pidgeons (hope that spelling's correct, I've thrown out the dictionary I had which was about thirty! I can't remember if there's a 'd' in it) "Woos" because that's what they do, "woo, woo". We started off with two but now have about 13 of them! Most of them live in our Mop Tops (Robinia) just outside the study window. In the morning my hubby stands at the window and goes "woo, woo" and they pop their heads out and "woo, woo" back, then come to the back door for breakfast!!

Talk again soon,
Savanah

Wow, Savanah - what a delight it must be to have so many different types of birds around to watch. I bet some of them are real beauties! I do not know that much about birds/breeds, but I love to watch birds. I love to watch David Attenborough's documentaries on birds, he has some really good stories.

Its hard to believe having all those beautiful birds flying free and coming to visit like that.

It's a pleasure to share my part of the world with you all. Since my last post, I've discovered that I can do a lot more with that "blog" I mentioned. I've added more photos since and I'm having a wonderful time!

As I write, the geese have come in, a fantastic site over the desk top. I've got to make sure the camera is handy at all times!

This afternoon a crested pigeon was under our outdoor table with the umbrella overhead and his/her mate was on top of the table spying through the gaps at the one underneath - great to watch.

Just so you know, Savanah (& anyone else who wants to post pictures here). Its easy once you have the pictures posted somewhere on the web.

Instead of using the quick reply at the end of the postings, you can click on reply at the bottom of one of the posts. Or you can just start a new topic. Then you get a full post window and there is a spot to click to add a picture - hold your mouse pointer over the little icons and it will say "enter an image". All you have to do is add the direct link to the picture and it will show up here. You can add several in one post if you want to.

Thanks, I see the little square now. I'll have to have the URL written down before I come in here.

Cheers,
Savanah
