What is the best way to clean diamond jewelry at home?

Many people often ask us how to clean diamond jewelry so that it is brilliant and full of fire. Diamonds attract grease and dirt like a magnet. Lotions, creams, hairspray and perfume form a film over your diamonds over time and make them look dull.

After years of experience, we have found that the following method is one of the surest ways to keep your diamonds clean if cleaning at home.

1. Mix one part Mr. Clean (available at most major supermarkets) to 8 parts of hot water. (Not boiling hot).

2. Carefully soak your diamond jewelry for a short period of time in this solution - approximately 10 - 15 minutes is usually enough. (Please do not put pearl jewelry or emerald jewelry into this solution - pearls are too soft and some emeralds may discolor)

3. Remove all your diamond jewelry slowly and gently brush off residue and dirt with a SOFT bristle toothbrush.

4. Rinse well with water, set jewelry aside to let air dry. You now have diamond jewelry that sparkles and is full of fire.

Thanks for the full explaination. I always have my diamonds professionaly cleaned and it gets expenisve. I actually tried this on one of my diamond rings and it worked very well and my diamond is really bright now. Can you use this with Rubies or Emeralds or any other kind of stones?

I just realized you said not to use Pearls or Emeralds. Sorry for that error. Is there any other types of stones you can't clean with this solution? If you can't, do you know any other solutions?

Thanks for the tip - I usually just ask the jewellers to do it for me. :o)

I'm not sure what Mr. Clean is though...

I watch a lot of Martha Stewart and recently she had a weddings show and she said you could use vinegar in place of Mr. Clean. And follow the rest of the above instructions.

They will help. I have recently tried this on my jewelry and my diamonds are as clean as when I have them professionaly cleaned. It'll save you money.
