I am moving from a house with a nice big yard to an apartment. I will only have a small patio for growing my cherished herbs. What is the best type of soil for container herbs?

Great question! After years of having flowerbeds and a veggie/herb garden, I now have a balcony. I'm planning maybe grape tomatoes, basil, maybe mint or a few other herbs. It's a small balcony, though.

I know herbs grow well in containers and the fragrances are wonderful for a patio - to just sit there with a cup of tea and a good book is so relaxing. I like to grow rosemary, basil, sage, rose geranium, lavender and oregano. I need to know the best soil to use for this purpose, and if I should get some type of plant food for them.

I use a mix of 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite and 1/3 perilite. It works for me but I can water daily if need be. If you cannot water daily you might want to consider some of those water crystals or a potting soil made for containers.
A different option would be to grow your herbs hydroponically. You can set hydroponic units up outside.

Most herbs are very easy to grow and not too picky about their soil - just about any potting mix will do!
