I have several bird feeders up during the winter and several black-capped chickadees visit daily. I've noticed that rarely land on the feeder if another chickadee is there and they always take their selected seed and eat it elsewhere. I love watching these guys!

Here's an article I just posted about some of the great adaptations chickadees have for surviving in winter (since they don't migrate). They are pretty amazing little critters!

Chickadees are amazing birds! I like that they are so neat when eating; other birds throw the seed around but the Chickadees only take one seed and fly away to eat it and drop the husks where they won't pile up.
They are so bold, too. My DD had some Chickadees that would eat from her hand, she just sat near the feeder with seeds in her hand and before long they were perching on her fingers!

They are bold birds, that's for sure. Or perhaps smart enough to realize that we are providing food. . . the redpolls, grosbeaks and nuthatches scatter when I go out to fill the feeder. The chickadees usually just flutter up to another branch, and wait for me to finish. I haven't been able to get any to eat out of my hands frown . But I do have a pair of gray jays that will take food from my hands. smile

They're really cute! I want to go to Alaska and see them for myself.

Luckily, you don't have to come all the way to Alaska to find chickadees. They are one of the most common feeder birds in the northern regions (according to Cornell Lab's Project Feeder Watch).
