Daymar was saying that it is nescessary to do the Bevelle temple destruction sphere to even complete that temple.

However, I do not recall doing this at all. Is this true?

yes I assure you its true you actually need to put the destuction sphere in place in order to get the ramp that takes you up to the bit with the stairs (the chest that actually contains the item is blocking your path once opened it dissapears revealing one of those reset switches!!!
