I have been reading the Bella Online cleaning newsletter for several months now. I just joined the forum and want to share with all of you that I really enjoy all of the hints and humor I have read. I am passionate about cleaning my home while radically reducing the amount of chemicals that I use. I look forward to helping out with some of my own tips and learning a whole lot more from Julie and all of you!

Do you have any formulas for cleaning windows with vinegar?

I love green cleaning, but I did a test run with 7 Generations cleaning products and unfortunately they just didn't clean as well as "regular products" do. So there's always a compromise in there it seems  I suppose you can use green products for every day use but still keep the powerful ones for when they are necessary.

You can try two different recipes. One is 'half' green, the other is 90% green.
1st recipe:
50/50 solution of apple cider vinegar and rubbing alcohol.
2cnd:
1 and 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup vinegar (white)
a shot of dishwashing liquid.(less than 1/2 teaspoon.)

I made a window cleaner that was a combination of Julie's two recipes. I wasn't doing it to be green, though; I was broke and trying to clean with whatever I had around the house!
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
shot of dishwashing liquid
Put ingredients in empty Windex bottle and then fill up with water.
It worked really well. The funny thing was that all I had on hand was cider vinegar and spearmint-scent alcohol. The kids said that every time I cleaned the windows, the house smelled like pickles and chewing gum :-).

I have used vinegar straight with a couple of drops lemon essential oil for antibacterial purposes. I buy mainly green cleaners. Clorox has a new one I just picked up but have not used it yet.

Ha! Being broke was one of the reasons I was turned on to green cleaners.
Oh, I have so many formulas to share . . . my husband teases me and calls it 'Ghettoingenuity'. Who says being broke isn't beneficial at times?

I know what you mean. There was a time when I made all of my own cleaners, laundry detergents, etc.
I just bought seeds for a plant called a soap nut tree. You use the nuts in your wash for laundry detergent. So far none have germinated but I hope at least one does and that I can keep it alive! It is a tropical tree. I have heard mixed reactions on the nuts but I will see.
I also bought some of those dryer balls. I love them! No more dryer sheets or liquid fabric detergent for me!

I use vinegar in my wash rinse, quite a bit. Not always, mind you, because I've fallen in love with the lavendar-vanilla ones.
Soap nuts, sounds interesting! Let us know how it goes. I would really be interested to know how it works.
