Well I had posted awhile back about a brestfeeding billboard my DH had seen. Well now I saw another one yesterday. However this time it was one of those bus shelter/stop locations. And it had a slightly different message - "Babies were born to breastfeed." I feel that everyone has the right to their own opinion, but why is this [censored] being advertised everywhere? I took one poster's advice and typed in "Breastfeeding Billboards" into Google and was shocked at what all came up. No offense, but why is this such a big deal? It's a normal part of life and I don't understand why these activist groups are going around spends tons of money to broadcast it.

I know, let's make women who might want to breastfeed but can't feel like failures by putting adverts up like this...

I wonder why there are no adverts of normal women who, for whatever reason *can't* physically breastfeed... shall we create one? How about a totally average woman with a big slogan ' my boobs don't work, it's not my fault'

Or how about an average woman with the slogan ' I was born to feed my child and I do... by formula'

If Mothers want to breastfeed and can do so, then great.. if they don't want to or can't.. then what's it got to do with someone else?

Oh, oh, oh.. I've just thought of another thing I could do if I was a rich millionaire and was able to go through pregnancy without pain... I could have a kid and not breastfeed it, be very vocal in not breasfeeding it and get a bottle of wine, tip it away, put purple grape juice in it, stick a teat on it somehow and give it to my kid.

Man, that one is going on my list of 'things to do if I ever have a child'

My SIL has already said she plans to formula feed their baby, so my brother can participate in 2am feedings and help her out. She has two sons and she wasn't able to breastfeed either of them. I don't have a problem with that, it's her choice, and if she wants to arrange it so my brother can take some of the late night/early morning feedings, more power to her!

I thought that babies were born to be babies. I did not know that they were born with certain expecations and responsbilites other than to just eat, cry, sleep and pooop (sarcasm).

I said this before, but the dumbest people shout the loudest. I rarely see billboards for political and social issues where I think to myself "Oh, what a reasonable statement!".

I still don't understand the argument about nipple confusion, or whatever it's called. My sister pumped when she couldn't be there to actually breastfeed, and neither nephew has had a problem. In fact, I've babysat several newborns, and I've never seen this happen.

I actually think its another way of making women feel guilty about bottle feeding and putting pressure on women who don't want to breastfeed.
Women who don't want to breast feed are often given a very hard time. One of our secretaries ended up in tears until her DH intervened...
She felt like they were "ganging up" on her and treating her like a silly girl - she was made to feel uncaring, a bad mother and was even pressured into "trying" to breastfeed...(while in tears)
She said all through her pregnancy (unplanned) that she didn't want to breastfeed but, several of the nurses did not accept her decision. Her DH spoke to their Doctor and she spoke to the nurses...
Some women don't want to breast feed...end of story.
It seems just as there are women who want to give birth naturally, with no drugs or have a water birth, or breast feed (some for years) not all women feel the same way.
I can see why people are concerned when pregnant women smoke or take drugs - and I know the first milk produced by the mother contains antibodies that help the baby's immune system...but even so...babies don't seem to face a major disadvantage in life if they're bottle fed - surely, its more important that mother and baby are happy and comfortable.
Some women choose to bottle feed because its easier (in their opinion) if they're heading back to work and/or their husband's can help with the feeds - AND, they don't want to express for various reasons.
So, these billboards may serve to "educate" women...however, pregnant women get lots of information on breast feeding anyway (so I'm told) so, I can't help but feel these billboards are also, to pressure women to "do the right thing for baby" and "give them the best start in life"...guilt and pressure.

I totally don't buy the whole "nipple confusion" thing. With her first kid, my friend only breastfed (and wished she hadn't!) with the second, she did a mix of breastfeeding and formula, because she said no way in hell is she going to be the only one waking up all night to feed the bugger. The second kid wound up adapting very fast and would eat away no matter what.
