I totally get the kitty reaction. I'm WAAAAAAY more vocal to people who show me pet pictures than people who show me kid pictures.

1. Fear of the kid turning out bad (ungrateful, hateful, drug user, dropout, mouthy, absent, you name it) 2. Being able to pick up and go whenever and wherever I want 3. I get to keep more money and can buy more toys (this is the #1 reason we get called selfish. Nahhh...we're just different that way) 4. I don't have to worry to death about something happening to my child (that would be devastating to me if something bad happened to it) 5. I have control over my life and its activities rather than someone else's life taking priorty 6. No annoying cartoons and baby babble 7. No stench, no mess to clean or wipe 8. Really - I've always preferred animals 9. Freedom...freedom...FREEDOM!!!

You all have summed up the reasons rather nicely. I know that for me, a huge indicator that I should not have kids is the fact that I respond enthusiastically to animals, rather than children, much like Linux Lady, Tressthefool and Angela P. I just turn to mush over animals, but children don't really inspire me in that way.

1.) not wanting to get pregnant! yuck!!! 2.) not having to worry about getting my body back into shape after having a kid 3.) not having to listen to whinning, tantrums, complaining,etc... 4.) i already am prone to anxiety and having kids would definitely increase that quite a lot! 5.) not wanting to lose my independence 6.) like my free time 7.) like the close relationship i have with my DH 8.)as a feminist no matter how you slice it women still get saddled with more respons. when having a kid and i would hate that 9.) my hubby really doesn't have much interest in children in general, doesn't really interact much with my friend's kids 10.) would hate to have my life revolve around kid centered things (tv, chuckee cheese,etc...) 11.) the ability to change jobs and/or move or simply to try other things

GREAT way to put that. I see kids, and I may think every once in a blue moon that something they do or say is relatively cute or heartwarming. I see ANY animal, and I melt every time, wanting to touch it, watch it, thank God for it...I just get giddy seeing an animal. Kids...not so much. Er, not really...at...all...

I love these types of threads 1) When I am in a relationship, I enjoy spontaneous sex. 2) Saving 15% of my salary towards retirement in my late 50s or early 60s. I'll turn 38 this year. 3) No parent teacher meetings to attend. 4) No calls from teachers and/or principals about bad grades or bad behavior. 5) I can tell dirty jokes when I am with friends and I don't have to watch my language. 6) I get to choose my reading material when I am not at work. 7) If I lose my job, I can be a ski bum for a winter before I have to look for another job. 8) I can sleep in or get up early if it is not a work day. 9) I pack a lunch only for myself and nobody else. 10) Discounted car insurance for being accident free for 5 years. 11) I get to spend money on myself rather than on Junior's extra curricular activities. 12) I can do as I damn well please in my time away from work. I don't have to waste time w/scouts, soccer practice, school plays or any other kid related bs I have no interest in. 13) I drive a car that gets 30 mpg instead of a gas guzzling van or SUV. 14) I live in an a 1100 sq. foot townhouse. No need to worry about a maintaining a yard for Junior to play in.

26) I want to enjoy my life - see reasons 1 through 25...
Please Explain:- I don't want to try and do everything...juggle work, home, kids, school, other activities, supermarket shopping...It wouldn't work for me - I wouldn't enjoy my life. I don't want to write off 20-30 years doing something that doesn't really interest me and look at my life saying, "when the kids are older, we're going to travel"...(fill in all the other fun things we do NOW)
Some trips are either impossible or less enjoyable when you're older. In our travels we meet younger people travelling before having kids, single people and older parents...not all that many 40-somethings have the freedom or money to go dog sledding in Quebec or wine tasting in Stellenbosch!
Take today for example - I've been working in Kyoto and I'm now in HK - I fly home tomorrow night. So, I'm sitting at my desk (skipping lunch after a huge working breakfast at the Peninsula Hotel) looking at the Harbour & Kowloon...tonight it's dinner at a friend's apartment at the Peak...beats dashing for the supermarket in a people mover full of kids any day!

I'm so glad you surfaced it, Mike... When I am in a relationship, I enjoy spontaneous sex. I never want to get too personal or raunchy in this forum, but my God there is something to be said about the incredible freedom in sexual exploration and noise that may come with it when kids aren't in the house. I'm trying desperately to clean up what I want to convey -- my boyfriend and I, who have been together for a year, had a very oral encounter before work this morning. It was THE most spontaneous thing either of us could have imagined. There we were, enjoying our normal coffee -- he reading the newspaper while I chisled at the crossword -- and he asked to read a particular cartoon (Sherman's Lagoon), which was on the backside of my puzzle. We were in such short distance between couch and chair that I crawled it over to him without thinking a thing. I was in my T-shirt and shorts. As soon as I got to him, he said, "Baby, you have no clue what it does to me to see you by my legs." Hmmm. I just went back to doing my crossword puzzle for two minutes, and then I capitalized. I crawled back. And we had a really spontaneous morning. I never wanted to introduce a raunch factor in our forum, but seriously folks, we get to do a helluva lot more in our lives without kids than those who have to worry about noise, poise and spontinaeity (sp?) just can't even think about. "Don't wake the kids" is something I love to toss as I let it all out. YAY!
