I hope most of you know the lovely Julie Christie who is up for an Oscar next month (I hope she wins!!!) and starred in the very famous film Doctor Zhivago in 1965. What most people don't know is that she is childfree and never married (she cohabits with her partner, a journalist). It would be cool if she won the Oscar this year since it would be back to back with Helen Mirren's (another childfree woman!) win last year. Julie Christie and Helen Mirren look better than ever nowadays in my opinion, perhaps a testament to their childfree status.

It's nice to know that yet another talented, beautiful actress didn't cave to the pressures of society to have children. It seems like more than ever nowadays, pregnancy and child-rearing are glamorized by Hollywood. I was disheartened last night to hear while seeing only a few minutes of Entertainment Tonight (I don't normally watch those annoying shows) that one of my favorite singers, Gwen Stefani (I like her with No Doubt better than when she's solo, but she's not bad that way either), is once again pregnant! It seems like she just had the first one, and now another - seems soon to me. Shows like that can't go five minutes without updating us on who's pregnant now, or who "might" be pregnant - it was really crazy last night, when the pregnant co-host sitting in for Mary Hart was interviewing Matthew McConaughey about his girlfriend's pregnancy, and then they were right on to the news of Gwen Stefani and hinting that Angelina Jolie is pregnant again. Enough already! There are other pursuits out there!

I still like the rebuttal made famous on this forum:

"You procreated! Congratulations! You've done what rats everywhere around the world do every day!"

i know what you mean! i can barely watch those shows.it seems like they spend so much time on that! it's so ridiculous! thank goodness there are at least some stars out there who are CF and proud of it.
it's like some of these stars are more famous now for being preggers than for their acting or singing ability. i mean what has britney done lately?

I hadn't heard about McConaughey. I just googled him, and here are his deep thoughts on the subject. It doesn't sound like him AT ALL. I wonder what parenting cult he subscribes to...

"My girlfriend Camila and I made a baby together," McConaughey wrote on his site. "its 3 months growin in her womb and all looks healthy and lively so far.

"we are stoked and wowed by this miracle of creation and this gift from God, and so excited for the adventure that will come in raising this child, being a mother and a father, and [shepherding] him or her through this life...

"from moms and dads, to family, to community, it takes the best will and support from everyone to raise the healthiest children we have in society...

"wish us the best, keep us in your prayers, and God bless evolution... thanks for bein fans of me and my work and now this new and miraculous chapter in my life, as me and Camila and our child do our best to just keep livin...

"wow, McConaughey"

I think somebody has dropped Matthew McConuaghey on his head one too many times.

I really want to see "Away From Her", the film that Julie Christie is nominated for. My co-worder saw it a couple of weeks back and said it was amazing, even if she cried nost of the way through it.

Pikasam, I totally agree - either that, or he did indeed join a cult. Happytobechildfree, that doesn't sound anything like the Matthew McConaughey a few months back, prior to the pregnancy announcement - the last I heard, he wasn't interested in settling down and having kids. Weird - he's changed a lot since "Dazed & Confused".

I can't tell you all how hearbroken and disappointed I am.

I don't think he's ever been the sharpest tool in the shed, but he's always made that southern drawl sound good, and that smile... plus I've always liked his kooky off-beat persona. That whole livin' out of an airstream thing. It was charming. This new phase is not.
