I leave the child-rearing to people who feel called to it. I've never felt that call.

I am a fan of American Idol to start with. I think it is great that Simon is out there giving a different voice and perspective in the Hollywood/entertainment world.

Big, screamin' ditto. I always liked him, mostly because he had the kahones to be an @$$ to people on national TV. Now, I think I love him.

This is a nice contrast to the recent clip of Heath Ledger that's been all over TV. The one where he states, about fatherhood, that it's "the ultimate selfless act." Well, no, it clearly is not. Adopting a child is selfless, or giving a large part of one's income to charity, or risking one's life for someone else's, but not simply creating a child.

i'm just so happy that a hollywood celeb is bucking the trend to reproduce or talk about it incessently like nicole kidman did for yrs. she really irritates me! i like simon too and i think it's a wonderful thing that he's giving so much of his money to charity.

I don't mean to speak ill of the dead. I feel really bad for what happened to him. It's really tragic.

I don't know the whole story, haven't followed it that closely, but apparently some of his Hollywood friends have stated that they weren't surprised he died young b/c he was struggling with alcohol abuse. I know from experience that alcohol or drug abuse is a nightmare for children. He really needs to get over himself. I think people should sort out their own issues before they become parents. The bottle always comes first for alcoholics, and the kids have issues for the rest of their lives.

I've always thought Simon has a dichotomic personality - he can either be really nice or really mean. I admire him for being himself despite the backlash from the public. And he seems quite protective of Paula:

If it weren't for Simon I bet American Idol ratings would be really low. Having children would take away the time and energy required for him to sufficiently entertain the public.

DH & I have watched American Idol since the first season, and we've always loved Simon, because for the most part, we agree with him. We're musicians, and we know when people are just not cut out for the competition or if performances are off, etc. There have been few times that we've disagreed with his assessment of contestants (it has happened, though - seems like he has a few "off" nights), and now here's another thing for us to agree with him on - the fact that he's CF and cares about animals. Anyone who supports animal charities and cares about animals is OK with me! smile
