I was listening to a talk show the other day on the radio and they were talking about having people in the delivery room during birth. They took calls from people who had 10+ people in the delivery room.
A lot of women's reasons for having their entire family (and DH's entire family) in with them was "we didn't want them to be left out!" One woman said, "I couldn't pick and choose because then people would be hurt, so I had to have everyone in!" ("Everyone included extended family, plus hubby's sister's family.) One woman's DAD was taking video RIGHT THERE!! One woman said that her MIL was in Florida and wanted someone to take video of the birth, and the mom said "You need to come here and see your grandchild be born" even though they were already taking video.
OMG, how full of yourself do you have to be? That people would be HURT because they didn't see you push a bloody kid out of your crotch? (Oh, by the way, that's what the pregnant woman's DH was looking at when the darling grandchild was conceived.) I mean, seriously, do people FORGET how children are MADE when it's time for delivery? What goes in must come out, folks! (I'm sorry for being so graphic, but I've got the most horrible images in my head right now.)
Oh, everyone, please come look at my crotch!
I know this is a HUGE reason I don't want kids. There is NO WAY anyone but DH would ever be in that delivery room with me, and he would be lucky to get in! I don't want people looking at THAT!!!
My sister didn't even want us at the hospital. Her mom was the only one she allowed, and she was having a C-section both times, and no family was even in the room with her except her husband. I was like, "THANK YOU!"
I kind of have a feeling that this is how my super-involved SIL is going to be. She'll probably have all the in-laws in there.

My SIL is having a baby in June. I can't see her inviting the whole family into the delivery room, but if she does, I'll have to pass. I've seen enough of those labor and delivery shows on TV to know that if I'm there and see some blood, they'll be scraping me off the floor! She doesn't seem the type who would want an audience, though. She may want my brother (her husband) and her mom with her, doubt she'd even want my parents in there either.
My former supervisor, now retired, who had six children herself and many many grandchildren, said she didn't like being in the delivery room with her daughters. She said it was too hard to watch "her baby" (as her daughters were to her) in pain. I can understand that!

Oh, everyone, please come look at my crotch! lngilbert, this made me laugh so hard!!!!! (I'm still laughing...) My childhood best friend had a kid 5 or so years ago, and I was at the hospital during the birth. Thank god she didn't ask for me to be in the delivery room at the moment of revealing. (Ew.) The staff only allowed a couple of people, and I was luckily left out. I did get to see her beforehand, though, and I was told that dang, I had just missed her being given an enema and measured for dilation! I just don't get it. Hee hee... "please come look at my crotch!" Brilliant.

I think this post is a riot, too. I can't imagine having my Dad in there. That would be too much. My sister had nephew's sperm donor and my Mom. They told me I wasn't allowed in the delivery room b/c I get too nervous. And that was *fine* with me. I don't do well with graphic visuals.
10+ people in the room is nuts. That's like stadium seating. Good God.
Save your own life - don't have kids!

really??? Do people actually feel left out??? I think the only person I would want is my sister. I wouldn't even want my husband or my parents let alone any of his family members.

What is so interesting/sad/fascinating/double standard-y is that you generally cannot have people in the O/R setting or there for a procedure when you DO want them, except in childbirth. There are many times in the hospital when it would be so helpful/ comforting to have someone with you if you are in pain or scared etc. Certainly you should be able to have one or two people with you in delivery for support, esp. if you are having a hard time etc but more than that is a hazard - health (germs etc) and otherwise (crowded, stress, people freaking out). I am sure a lot of women want the fuss but a lot feel pressured to invite the whole world. Sad and gross. IF (IF) we have a kid, I have told DH he is not allowed to look down there - i'd like to still have a semblance of a sex life after...

When I had my daughter I wasn't interested in a crowd either. my Father and Mother were the only ones present and I wasn't comfortable with that as it was.

WHY????? would anyone want that? Whatever happened to keeping private things private?
I have to admit - I saw a heavily pregnant woman's stomache for the first time on Sunday night and seriously couldn't handle seeing all the veins and stretching. If anybody invited me into the delivery room, I'd be passed out on the floor before I made it to the door.
I don't get why they video it either. I mean, who do you show the video to? Do you have a "Birth Night" for those who weren't there to see you spread-eagled on a bed? What would you serve as nibblies at a night like that? I wouldn't think that it's a moment people want to relive.
