I don't know if any of you are "Boston Legal" fans, but last night's episode involved a case that both DH & I found very intriguing. Here's the situation: There is this flighty, somewhat insane lady who has been on there in the past - she has had some issues here and there that might lead to her being put in a mental home for a while, possibly, but not yet, as far as we know. Anyway, she's in music therapy, where they are advising her to sing whenever she's stressed and approach life as if it were a musical. She is very politically incorrect about different races, ethnicities, religions, etc. However, she met and "fell in love with" an attractive African-American male and after 2 dates, when they hadn't even slept together, she forced herself on him orally and then stole his sperm, without his knowledge - he didn't really like her that much, but she just had her way, and somehow managed to extract his stuff and refrigerate it for a little bit, and then had it implanted into her, which did end up getting her pregnant, because she wanted to have a black baby!
He sued, because he felt that his rights had been violated, and he was a guy that was heavily into charity work and one of his main causes was to help kids with deadbeat dads. He felt like he had no choice in this matter, no even having intercourse with the girl, and that he would end up being a deadbeat dad, which is exactly what he hates and fights against. There were very interesting discussions during the court case, where it was debated whether the crazy lady should be forced to take the RU-486 pill, since she was only 5 weeks along, and whether that constituted abortion, which, according to the law, cannot be forced upon a woman. Alan Shore was arguing for the man, and Shirley Schmidt/Katie (the new young attorney) were arguing for the crazy lady, though they didn't agree with what she did. I found it all very interesting, and I also found it odd that both DH & I were on the side of the man, who was definitely violated, and none of the female characters on the show thought the woman was wrong enough to have to take that pill. We did, but that's not what ended up being the ruling - SPOILER ALERT: the judge, also a woman, found that the crazy lady's actions were dispicable, but there was no way that the court could lawfully force her to abort the fetus, even by taking the RU-486 pill.
Anyway, it was interesting....they pointed out that Roe v. Wade gave women rights to choose what they do with their bodies, but the rights of men when it comes to their bodily fluids and the creation of life have not changed. The title of the episode was "Roe v. Wade: The Musical", and it aired last night, on the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which I thought was cool.
