I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time. It's a shame that in 2007 society is still having a hard time letting women make choices about their bodies. We wanted only one child so my husband had a vasectomy. It is quick and easy and he now laughs at how worried he was. That is the best method because it is not as intrusive as some of the surgeries for women. There is also that new method for women that ends their period. Is that the one you are having a hard time getting? If you are young and haven't had children, it is going to be difficult for you and I am so sorry about that.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm looking into getting sterilization, but if you are taking birth control pills for an irregular period, you'll still have to take the pills. You can only stop taking the pills if you are using them strictly for bith control. There is now a sterilization proceedure that you can do as an outpatient proceedure that does not involve cutting. I'm not sure how it works, only being informed by my OBGYN. Also, there is a new pill called Lybrel that can take away your period permanently. I'll be starting it tomorrow and I'll keep you posted as to its effectiveness and side effects.

Havn't had it myself, but Ive been working in the medical field for a long time and seen the results. A tubal is a major surgery, with all the added risks that major surgeries have. Not to mention that it will mess with your hormones, and can really throw your personality off. If your husband is willing, have him get the vasectomy. 2 days of ice, and a little bit of crabwalking and its done with.

Kelly- I know who you feel! I hate worrying about BC. I have been on hormonal BC for over 8 1/2 years now and the side effects and mood swings sure do get old after a while. I am sick of having to worry about BC failure. If I were to get pregnant, I know that wouldn't be able to carry a child for 9 months and then give it up for adoption; I would most likely have an abortion. My husband agrees with me as well. It would be a hard thing to do, but we would have to do it. It makes me angry that doctors pass judgment on us and sort of push their beliefs/feelings on us, like we don't know what we want.

Tress- I believe that the new, less invasive procedure you are thinking of is Essure. During this procedure, your doctor will implant a little spring-like item in each tube. After the "springs" have been in place for 12 weeks, the doctor will inject some dye into your uterus and do an untrasound so make sure that a sufficient amount of scar tissue has formed around the "springs" to create a dam of sorts that blocks the tubes.

As another note- they even have needleless/no-scalpal vasectomies that they do now. Less pain, quicker recovery (which is pretty amazing that they are improving on the allready short average recovery of 4 days)

When my DH got the "snip" it was Friday afternoon. I took him home after, he laid down with a bag of frozen peas and fell asleep. The next morning we went shopping all day and he had no pain and no bruising!

No way I would've recovered that fast!

My DH's experience was like that, too. He even admits it wasn't that bad. God, I wish we could get the word out that vasectomies aren't that bad! Maybe some of the drug addicts, slackers and other people could get vasectomies. But those are always the ones that have the surprises it seems. Ironically, people like that usually aren't that self aware. And I'm thanking people that don't have good jobs usually don't have good insurance that would cover a vasectomy. Vasectomies should be free. Vasectomies aren't as controversial as abortions, and wouldn't it be wonderful if there were vasectomy clinics? I'm thinking on college campuses, right next to the frat house!
