Okay, if you've been a writer for even a week, you've had at least one dopey comment. Let's make a list. I'll start:

1. I could do that too, if I had the time. (Translation--unlike you, I have a life.)

2. Why don't you go on Oprah so your book will sell better? (I'm so stubborn...she calls and calls and I just let the machine pick up.)

Shouldn't you consider going back to teaching [fill in the blank]? (As though this writing gig is just a phase.)

Can I send my manuscript to your agent?

Oh - and not really what they say when they call, but the fact that people will call me at all times during the day because they think I'm free to talk whenever.

"Watcha Doin with that pen and notebook? Writin'?"
