I just got home from work, where I had a mini-argument with a coworker. She's a born-again hardcore Christian and I'm, well, nothing officially. Something pagan with Buddhist leanings? I like to say spiritual. Who says I have to be Christian to be ethical or to believe in something?

But I digress.

She was talking about gay marriage and what an abomination it is, how "their parts don't match up", and other reasons against it. My best friend is gay. He doesn't really plan to get married, but I feel for him that he can't get married if he wants to in our own state. Christian Coworker knows that I'm CF and don't plan to have kids (she also used to say I was living in sin until I got married this summer). CC said that gay people physically can't have children with each other, so there was no reason for them to get married.

Excuse me? So, since I don't plan to have children, I shouldn't have bothered getting married?

I don't know - it just upset me and rather than go off about it, I stared at her like she was an alien, said that we'd have to agree to disagree, and sat back down at my desk. I am so non confrontational thanks to my childhood, and I can't tell anyone but family and best friends what I really think of them. It can be pretty stifling.

Thoughts, anyone? A cheerful message? Some fun retorts I could have used?

I would have said, "If you only got married to breed, I feel really sorry for your husband."

"I pity you."

Shake your head and walk away.

Why?

Because that is what they think of you, IMHO.

So, when I realized that this sort of Christian thinks that heaven is only for people who are exactly like themselves, I realized I'd rather go to hell.

A response I've used in reply to the "You're going to hell" comment that shuts up the Fundies, that can't shut up otherwise, is:

"I'll save a seat for you."

My thoughts are that it's only people who are unhappy in their own relationship who poke their nose into others.

Ask her what should happen to the Christians who medically can't have children? should they all be put in a cage and left to die as they can't reproduce? I assume she thinks they shouldn't ever get married... what's the point?

What about the selfless couples who can't have children so decide to adopt? again, as they can't have their own.. should that be abandoned? but wait.. if it is, who will look after all the unwanted children? abortion? I doubt she is pro-choice...

two women love each other, they get married and they adopt...

two people love each other, they get married and they adopt...

In this day and age if the only 'different' thing about the child is the fact it has 2 mums / dads... it will probably grow up more balanaced than a lot of kids nowadays....

With the ammount of older couples taking the risk and having unsafe pregnancies despite Dr's warnings, I think that any couple gay/straight/whatever who decideds to adopt is wonderful. Those kids need a home too, I'm glad someone is willing to give it.

whenever i hear the "marriage is sacred" kind of [censored] i always say " is that why there is a %60 divorce rate b/c marriage is so sacred?" maybe if gays could get married the rate would actually go down.

also "i'm too busy with my own life to worry about what other people are doing." you could even quote the bible" he who has no sin should cast the first stone." or "judge not or you will be judged." just throw the same religious [censored] in her face. i was raised catholic and i go to a very progressive church but i really don't consider myself catholic. i really disagree with a lot of things esp. the pope.

anyway, my hubby and i try to incorporate different beliefs into our life including paganism, buddism, and other religious that are open and progressive.

i think personally that many evengenical christians are very hypocritical and judgmental. they really irk me to no end.

I thought this was a great line Duane.

I was partying with some friends last night and the opportunity arose where it seemed like it would fit. I don't even remember the context, but it was nothing to do with procreating...probably something about going to hell if we had another drink or something.

So I said it, and I swear, it was one of the best reactions I've ever gotten from a one-liner. Everyone laughed so hard, and made me repeat it four times so they could all remember it. My DH was like, "Where did you get that?? I've never heard that one before" which is a huge compliment since he's heard almost anything I can come up with. Have to admit my timing was really good.

Thanks!! I can't wait to use it on a bingo-er, but fortunately I don't get around fundies too much, so that might be awhile.
