i agree that you can get sick from all sorts of places. however,i must say that i always got more sick from jobs that involved kids than from working with adults.i think part of it is that adults(for the most part) are more diligent when it comes to hygenie. kids on the other hand well ... they dont' cover their mouth, wash their hands,etc....(not all kids mind you but i've seen many who don't).i wash my hands constantly as well as use germ-x when i wipe a kid's nose, change their diaper, blow my own nose,etc... so i try to do what i can. however, like i said before when parents bring in their sick kids to the gym it's even harder to not get sick. i just think that when their kid is sick then working out should be a much lower priority for them. they don't have to work out. yeah it's imp. but it's not something they have to do like go to work.
i didnt' see my boss today so i didn't get a chance to to talk to her about it but like i said before i plan on doing it on monday.

Honestly frieda I am totally squicked out by this lady's blog! Why can't she be bother to wash her baby's face? What else can she not be "bothered" to do?
I'm feeling queasy now! Sorry 'bout that. Me too. It's still going on. Yet again today she writes, not so graphically: "Baby" has yet another cold and was up for several hours last night coughing. She coughed every two minutes, exactly. She did not wake up. We, however, did. Every two minutes. It almost is making me want to write a satirical fake mommy blog. But it would be hard to be funnier than the real ones.

Ewwww. Children really are grotty, nasty little germ carriers. There is nothing grosser than a snotty, loudly-sucking-it-back-up kid. I'm squicked out just thinking about it.
(Mind you ... I wasn't very impressed when the cat projectile vomited on the bed, complete with chunky bits, this morning ... almost as bad!).
Indigo, I totally agree with you ... if the kid is sick, then stay home with it. The working out might have to go by the board for a day or so. Hey, them's the sacrifices you have to make when you have children - YOU get to look after them, and not foist them off onto other people who didn't sign up for germ warfare.
I know in any decent daycare here, if your kid is sick, they literally won't touch them - you have to make alternative arrangements. And fair enough too ... they don't need all the other kids, the caregivers, and the caregivers animals all coming down with it...

Oh, so the little girl who gave me a cold two weeks ago walked into class again today. "I have a cold again!" And she proceeded to sniff loudly to prove it. Then another kid pipes up, "I have a cold, too!"
I told them that if they have a cold they shouldn't come to class. Of course, I should tell the parents that, but I wasn't sure if the kids were actually sick or just pretending, so I didn't want to say anything.

hi i just wanted to update you on the "sick children coming to the gym" thing.i talked to my boss today about what happened last week with two school age children coming to the gym sick. i asked her if there a policy regarding this and she said there sure is and that she will reiterate the policy again and have me hand out flyers to the parents. it's a little awkward for me b/c i see these parents all the time and i generally like all of them. however, i dont' want to get sick and i certainly don't want other children to get sick either. my boss was really upset to hear that parents were bringing their kids in and said right out that it's not fair to the workers or the other kids. she said that frankly the parents don't care about not infecting others b/c they just want to get their workout in. i'm glad i talked to her about it. like i said i just feel a little weird though b/c i'm sure some the parents will think that i said something which i did. my hubby said just to tell them that it's just center policy and leave it at that.

I also feel weird saying something. I'm glad I'm not alone! With the kids' classes, I can kind of understand why they bring their kid. I mean, they pay for X amount of classes, and if Jimmy is sick but can participate and wants to, of course they'll take him. And then if he's sick and can't go, they complain that they can't do any makeup days. So I guess they want their money's worth.

It is true that children seem to have the most illnesses at any given time. But its also true that many adults come to work sick with a cold simply because they cannot afford to take a day off. Especially in the retail and service industries. While I am not saying you should bring sick children into a gym or day care, there are always going to be plenty of them at school to make eachother sick, and in turn their parents sick, and they will pass it on to you. The best defense is hand washing and making sure to spray and wipe down the machines before and after you work out. And most importantly, DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE.

believe me i'm very dilligent at the gym. i don't know how other gyms are but i've noticed where i work at least that people are really good at wiping down the machines. my boss has signs posted and stuff in every room to clean the machines.
i get what you're saying about adults going to work sick. however, again having both worked with adults and kids during my career i've gotton more sick from the sick than at anytime working with adults.
again in part it's the lack of hygiene esp. with small children. i do all i can and hope for the best. this year it hasn't been too bad yet but winter is just starting so we'll see.
we did put up a note at work asking parents to please not send their kids in when they're sick to protect other kids and staff. i still have to ask my boss what to do if a parent does send a child in who is clearly sick. i talked to a friend of mine who works at the y and she said that they have a policy as well and if a sick child comes in they tell the parent that they have to take the child home.

Generally, parents don't solve a runny nose by wiping the back of their hand through the snot and then giving you a hug! And they cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze (usually.)
Kids don't seem to really do that.
