I have very thick, curly hair and lots of it. Because of this I wear my hair long but have always wanted it short. Whenever I go to the salon they tell me not to cut it short because it will make my head look big. Are there any hairstyles or a way to cut my hair so it will look like less hair and I can wear it short.

When my hair is short, I work very hard to keep away from 'big' hair. If I wear it curly it is a mass of curls and if I blow it out it sometime looks like the old 60's roller set.

You could go for a really short cut - say and inch or so with lots of texturizing. That way you could have short hair without a lot of work.

Curly hair can look good short if you have the right face shape. I have long curly auburn hair that is very coarse, and I did have it very short before. Half of the people who met me thought I was a boy and the other half thought I was a lesbian(not that there's anything wrong with it, its just not me). People with curly hair are so afraid of the big hair look, but if you put some product in it while its half dry it will usually look very nice. And also don't wash it more than 3 times a week. Curly hair is naturally dry and this dries it out more. I'm a bit of a weirdo, so I sometimes do wear my hair big, and I get compliments on it for not looking like everyone else.

I applaud the big hair wearers for sure!! hhaha it takes courage. as much as it may be said that layering adds volume, it also takes away from the boxy effect cuz not everything is ending in the same spot.

My hair is naturally curly. Like many curlies it turned that way right before puberty. My mother became frustrated with it since it was 1/2 way down my back, (I had yet to be concerned with my appearance at this point and didn't do much with my hair) so she convinced me to go for the short boy cut.

It was terrible. I had my hair short for a year and I basically looked like binky the clown. Not much fun during middle school.

I also didn't really know how to deal with my curly hair then either, so I do think that it could be something that's made or broken depending on finding the right styling product. I got my curly hair from my father and my mother's hair is straight as a board so I didn't get much help with styling tips.

I do think you'll have trouble with getting much from the style other than a mass of short curls everywhere. At least that's how I'd look with my hair very short. It could be cute though. I'd find a picture. If you can find a picture you like that's short with tight curls then I say go for it. Look for a face shape that's similar to your own.

Let us know how it turns out if you decide to take the plunge. I've been contemplating it lately, but I keep chickening out.
