I was recently writing a short article for another website on englightenment and I came across some very interesting points of view when I decided to review some literature. In short, the common threads that I observed were:
1. enlightenment can only be achieved upon releasing or transcending the ego.
2. when you are able to accomplish and ego-less self, then and only then will you be able to experience true enlightenment
enlgihtenment.
3. enlightenment is the result of a very rigorous spiritual path (much of which involves a degree of depravation of "unspiritual" practices or behavior).
4. enlightenment is a sort of final destination so to speak, where you achieve an evolution of sorts of the spirit.

Needless to say there are many underwritten implications in these viewpoints, but I am curious to hear from you guys as to what you think enlightenment is?

I think enlightenment for me would mean someone who can put others first with out wanting something back but at the same time not becomeing a door mat! someone who loves unconditionaly and whole heartedly and trust them selfs and other who are close to them. some one who can balence there life mental emotional and spiritual with there physical....

I know that this is probly not what most think enlightenment is but....hey at this point in my life that is a high and lofty goal that maybe in some space and time i can get too....lol

Your three points are right. But this is wrong-
enlightenment is the result of a very rigorous spiritual path (much of which involves a degree of depravation of "unspiritual" practices or behavior).

I disagree. You have to be driven, singleminded, and willing to sacrifice, to achieve. Without distraction, or pull into other directions.

Hello all,
Haridas - I actually didn't mean to imply that those were my views as to what enlightenment is, I was actually trying to point out the most popular themes that I found in my research on the topic..I really don't agree with any of those POV's and was just curious as to what my fellow Bellaonline philosophers thought about the subject!
