I am shocked by the ugliness of the comments on this story:

People are jumping to all sorts of conclusions that follow the gifted child stereotype. They are assuming that Ms. Holtz has no friends, is unhappy, was pushed by her parents...

It's also interesting that they are tearing her apart over her appearance. I guess I'll never understand the mentality of bullies...

My guess is that the negative comments come from two types (though I could be way oversimplifying things) of people: those who just don't get it, and think she was pushed/a grind/whatever; and those who are so insecure, the idea that a mere slip of a girl could achieve that at the tender age of 18 is a threat to their overblown self-image.

Personally, I would hate to be a lawyer, but I have a friend who loves it, and more power to them!

Bullies come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. Unfortunately.

I am surprised the state is allowing her to become a member of the bar before the legal age of majority. But, beyond that, I have no comment.

Brava to the student!

I found it interesting to see the tremendous volume of responses to the blog post. It really hit a nerve with a lot of people. I highly doubt a blog announcing an 18-year-old high school senior's recruitment into the NFL would get that kind of response.

One of the pegs in my daughter's class graduated from Law School at a similar age. She ended up joining the military--they were the only group that would let her actually practice law once she had passed the bar. Fortunately, that was during the Clinton "peace dividend" years.
