Yesterday on CBC radio in Canada, the call in program asked listeners to offer their best relationship advice. It was really interesting to sample the wisdom some learned by hard experience, or had been given to them by someone wise. So now it's open to you... what one piece of relationship advice would you (do you) offer and why?

Communicate, communicate, communicate!! Never just "assume" you know what the other person is thinking or what they really want.

After that? Lots of humor and laughter!!

"Communicate" is hard for me. I never learnt how to communicate properly as a child (seen not heard, sort of thing), so it's relatively new to me. Just this last week I was hinting about something to my hubby, and I really thought I was being very obvious about it. But he just wasn't getting it and eventually I blurted it out. He looked at me in utter astonishment. So my hints weren't as clear as I thought they were, obviously.

But to answer the original post - my relationship advice would be to spend a few moments every day reminding yourself of what you really appreciate about your partner. It gives you the warm fuzzies when you get that "I'm so lucky to have you in my life" feeling, and that translates into genuine, daily warmth and nutrition for your relationship.

Understand that sometimes you are going to be unhappy but that it will almost always pass. Ask anyone with a long and healthy relationship and they will tell you that they have fallen in and out of love and back in again with their partner many times.

Rule #1: Never date anyone that can (and will) guzzle a fifth of hard liquor, particularly tequila.

very very very good advice! Right up there with never date a guy who offers to show you how he can light his farts, belch the alphabet, do Beethoven's 5th on his armpit etc. on the first date. Thanks for the good one to add to the list Fish Gal!

Only marry the one that you geniuinely like.
I've watched many marriages that didn't work because in the end...she didn't really like the guy.

I've been married for over 16 years...and I wake up everyday appreciating who my husband is. I really like that guy.

Not everything needs to be said. I think we often overtalk every slight, point out every flaw. Words can be weapons, and things once spoken cannot be unheard.
I am all for communication and for sharing and for honesty. But the times I held my tongue are often the times I look back and am most grateful.
