What scares me is that this whole "green" thing is turning into a fad. And what happens when the fad is over? Being green goes out of style. Sigh.

Oh yeah, I agree. It's very disturbing. Along with the fad, there is the backlash of people who rebel against fads, and think it's a bunch of malarky simply because it IS a fad. Has anyone looked at truegreenconfessions? I never read it, but really the whole idea is built around this concept, because why else would people need to confess things? Obviously they're only going to confess how they ignore any efforts to be green. It's so frustrating!!

The thing about unaccompanied minors is hilarious. Everyone knows that the airlines are a [censored] shoot. You can't rely on them to get you or your bags to where they're supposed to go, for a whole host of reasons. Flying is terrifying and confusing for most adults, much less a young child, and throwing your kid on a plane like a piece of cargo is asking for trouble. Flight attendants and airport staff simply don't have the time to deal with this, but parents expect to dump it on them anyway?
The one time my nephew flew unaccompanied on a three hour flight from Sydney Australia to Auckland New Zealand, they mixed up his passport and the passport of another minor on the flight. We had to leave for LA the next day, and we just happened to flip the passport open that afternoon and realised it was the wrong one. Cue major panic and hassle. If we'd discovered that when we'd got to the aiport the next day, we'd have been toast.

I just learned that on a trip to NY my brother and his GF just went on, the airline lost her luggage on the way there, and it has never been seen since. Bummer if that was your kid!
What's next? Parents start dropping their kids off at restaurants alone..."Go have dinner Bratley!" and get mad when the servers don't babysit well enough or they can't find the kid when they come to pick him up? How about leave them alone at a hotel, so you can get a night off? The maids must need something to do at night, so they can babysit.

hi all, i posted the article as i thought it relevant to this forum. I hope everyone who comes across CF articles will also post them on the forum...whether is is pro or con CF... I am not British but am quite knowledgeble on Brit culture as i have spent sometime going to school in england...I can tell you that there is a big trend now in England for "bridget jones" syndrome. Many women over 30 are still single and choose to be that way. (that isn't to say they aren't actively having sex!) they just don't want the commitment, and hence they don't want the kids either. It is interesting. but then there is the other cases where teenage mothers are getting pregnant on purpose so that they can get council (govt. assisted) housing. My friend who is a social worker in London tells me these young women try to get pregnant so that they can get an appartment for free! it is appalling i know...but i just feel sorry for the child...great start in life! does this benefit happen in the states too?

I don't understand why it's always one extreme or the other. Either the 15-year-old can't walk 2 blocks to school, or the 8-year-old is riding his bike 6 miles to school.
I mean, which is it? Either you are taking too much care of your child or not enough (and in those instances, you expect others to take of your child for you.)
There HAS to be some middle ground, for pete's sake!

And what's to bet, that the people who won't let their kid walk 15 minutes to school, think nothing of sending them halfway across the continental US on a plane? Bizarre!!

"Why is that so ironic? I don't have a panda bear but everyone doesn't assume I hate them. They're just expensive and high-maintenance, like a kid."
This is a good point! It's like me and pets. I LOVE LOVE LOVE animals and hubby does too. HOWEVER we don't have a cat at the moment as we don't know where we are going to live plus we travel up to three times a year. It doesn't mean we hate them, we LOVE cats but now's not the right time and I'm sitting on the fence about cats. (But probably will!) With dogs we also LOVE them but things that dogs are more high maintenance with cats and we may never get one. You have to walk them daily any weather, they can annoy the neighbours and so on. So we probably will never get a dog - almost definately not. But that doesn't mean we hate dogs, we LOVE them, especially golden labradors. And we have both had dogs before and loved and cared for them. It's not just something we are ready to commit to. But it sure doesn't mean we hate them!!! Dogs - and cats - ROCK!!
I leave the child-rearing to people who feel called to it. I've never felt that call.

In fact, we'd be running a safari park AND farm if we had all the animals we like or love as pets!!!
